Recently, a blogger reader of mine mentioned to me the work of Bertrand Russell. Before this I had never heard of Russell. I appreciate the sharing of this kind of knowledge. What I found out is that Russell was a very smart man. But he was no Christ. Especifically his essay on "Why I am not a Christian." For the sake of space, I cannot post Russell's long explanations. So I will cover some parts I found numerous holes in. His treatise must be put in it's proper context circa 1920's. I feel his views on Christianity are therefore antiquated.

When describing the character of Christ for example, Russell mentions that the teaching of "turning the other cheek" predates Christ some 600 years. I'm not a theologian but the Bible clearly states that before the earth was created, Christ was already in existence. So this Russell view is easily debunked. Most of Russell's rants against Christianity stem from how cultural Christians live their lives, not by how Christ lived his. He also states that Christ's teachings were faulty because Christ thought that his second coming would happen within the life time of his first disciples. Russell applies literal translations to the Gospel stories. What Russell does not acknowledge is that Christ almost always spoke in parables which referred either to the distant past or the distant future. Russell also talks against the idea of an eternal hell. He could not come to terms that a benevolent God would do such a thing to people who did not repent. Funny he said that because when he died, Russell had his body cremated.

I have to grant that his thoughts were ahead of his time. And he offered many arguments against injustices perpatrated in the name of the governments as well as pseudo-churches, but that is why there exists in the West a separation of Church and State. Politics, as much as people try to mix them with true Christianity, do not mix. These are two separate entities. Russell wanted to be a philosopher like Socrates. In the Bible, the Apostle Paul deals with them accordingly. From reading his essay I deduce that he did not believe in a Christian view of God. The character of Russell can be summarized in this: he believed that a married couple should stay together, even if they are unfaithful to each other. His wife was sleeping with other men and he had no problem with it. A lot of his views to me sound Buddhist in nature. Now I know "why he was not a Christian.
