JACKSON, Miss. Down here in the Deep South, calls to bring back the hanging noose are coming from an unlikely source: a 62-year-old, black Republican mayoral candidate in Mississippi's largest city.
Long-shot George Lambus acknowledges his inflammatory platform has made some residents of Jackson slam doors in his face. Others walked out of a church where he spoke. Yet he insists his tough stand is welcome in some quarters of a state capital racked by crime, much of it black-on-black.
As the only GOP hopeful among nearly a dozen Democrats and four independents, his chances of winning the June election are slim: the majority-black city of about 180,000 is so heavily Democratic that no Republican has won the mayor's race in modern history. Yet, Lambus hopes to stand out in a crowded field by packing a silver pistol and talking bluntly about crime.
"Crime can only be alleviated by a noose and a stout tree limb," Lambus wrote in one of several homemade flyers he passes out in Jackson neighborhoods. "I will provide the noose and when the economy improves, I will get the jobs here."
The Mississippi Republican Party is not supporting Lambus. GOP Chairman Brad White said Lambus' message doesn't reflect "the values that we represent."
"He's already the novelty candidate," explained Leslie Burl McLemore, the city council president.
Still, anti-crime campaigns have resonated in Jackson in recent years: incumbent Mayor Frank Melton won a landslide victory in 2005 on promises to get tough. The mayor even went armed on security patrols through tough neighborhoods. He is now charged with federal civil rights violations for allegedly leading a sledgehammer attack on a suspected crack house.
With his federal trial set to start days after the May 5 primary, Melton's stand provoked such an uproar that several challengers are vying to unseat him. Yet Melton's 2005 pledge to run the "thugs" out of town seems mild in comparison to Lambus' calls for hangings and vigilante justice.
"Look at recent history, like in South Africa, when apartheid was abolished," Lambus said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "Blacks went on a crime spree. Other blacks got tired of it ... and they formed vigilantes and they killed people. It brought the crime down."
His pistol nearby as he peered out a window at his decaying Jackson neighborhood, Lambus added: "When you cut your yard, carry a gun. When you go to church, carry a gun. When you go to school, carry a gun."
Lambus also asserts that executions are the only way to control crime, adding "If we look at the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, it's driven with blood."
Some are offended by such bold talk from Lambus, a former union official who said he has battled illness, lives off Social Security and ran unsuccessfully for the state senate and city council in the 1980s.
"I don't think anybody in their right mind is going to pay any attention to this guy," said Jackson resident Vernon Archer, a former college professor in his 60s, who is black. "It's offensive, but it's so ridiculous you don't even know how to get mad."
Still, Lambus has been invited to at least two debates in April. And as the lone GOP candidate, Lambus is expected to automatically advance as the Republican candidate while Democrats and independents jockey and jostle in the May primary to decide who reaches the June ballot.
Lambus lives not far from the suspected crackhouse that Melton, as mayor, is charged with damaging in a vigilante raid in August 2006. Lambus charges that Melton was showboating and didn't live up to his promise to clean up the city's crime.
It's not clear if Melton will be on the ballot. He is suing a Democratic committee for removing his name over alleged residency problems.
Political scientist Marty Wiseman, director of Mississippi State University's Stennis Institute of Government, said the Republicans have shied away from fielding a serious contender for mayor.
"They're being fairly realistic because of what the numbers say," Wiseman said. "Jackson's voting patterns, I would assume, are going to mimic those of African-Americans in state elections, which has stayed around 90 percent or more Democratic."
And Wiseman said Lambus' message will not help his chances, adding "certainly someone that confrontational has no chance whatsoever.

Over the last four months, as the battle of our people continues to free Iraq of all foreign occupation. We have been studying the movements on the ground as well as analyzing the intelligence in order to assess the next strategy that the US administration will take under the leadership of the new presidency.
We had formulated our own plan of action based on the above mentioned, but have chosen to give the new president enough time to gather his thoughts and have a suitable amount of reports briefings that would give him also a good picture of the daily developments on the ground.
President Obama, After listening to your speech on the 27th of February 2009, in which you declared your general and public understanding of the ongoing war against our people, and gave your military and the honorable people of the United States brief points on your intentions in our country, we felt the spirit of the speech that your predecessor President JFK gave on the 20th of January 1961, on his inaugural address. In this speech, he offered a turbulent world, a way out of tensions and paid with his own blood for challenging the interests of those in your consecutive governments who hold the true keys to power. Those who would do anything to preserve their interests, wealth, power to create wars conflict.
We mention this with great honesty in hope to spread awareness and remembrance that a new Caesar may be betrayed, by his own, if he chooses to follow a different path. We do believe, on the other hand, that the spirit of the speech was well chosen.
We have listened well to your economic plans for your country released before this speech as well, and as ambitious as it may seem, we believe that if intentions are genuine within your congress, a considerable number of what you seek will eventually be fulfilled, but in case of failure, the republicans will be looking for a scapegoat to relate all their failures to. In this case it would be your administration. This will guarantee them a fast comeback.

Simply by choosing to resist occupation, a right guaranteed by God first and then by international conventions to all men. You have spoken to our people in part of your speech, and we thank you for these words, you have displayed a far better understanding our nation, than your predecessor, who preferred to dive deep into the oceans of illiteracy and ignorance. Despite the fact that you did not mention the Iraqi resistance in your speech, and chose to label us as terrorists along with those who arrived with your troops, we will set that aside for now, and mention a few facts for the record.
1- The people of Iraq whom you addressed, in all their sects colors and religions, refuse your occupation, and those who accept it, are those who benefit from it.
2- The Iraqis you addressed, as we truly hope, are not the ones who bathe in the riches of treason, behind your walls of the green zone, nor are they the likes of Ahmed Al Chalabi, whom your previous government conspired with and his likes from the dark alleys of 5 star hotels in the US and Europe prior to your occupation.
3- The Iraqi people you talked to, are those who never invited your occupation, and were trying their best to survive on what was possible, under the criminal sanctions that went on for 13 years only to be crowned with a foreign occupation, unmatched in criminal acts, in todays modern world.
President Obama, The suffering, that our people had to go through is beyond comprehension. And the endless crimes of your troops as well as that of neighboring countries, cannot simply be undone or dismissed, nor can they be brushed under the carpet. Your troops still occupy the land and kill the innocent, that is why we can only address you as the president of an occupying nation.
The Iraqi People are disappointed in your plan. They expect your troops to leave our country in full and not in part. Our people, seek a complete end of occupation and not the fulfillment of a strategic treaty that was rushed against the will of our people, in the last few days of your predecessor.
Our people, as well as the majority of people around the world, and in your country, want to see the last president be presented to an international war crime tribunal for all the crimes he has committed in the name of your country, only to benefit those who brought him to power in the first place.
We have never invited your occupation, nor have we asked your country to steal our countrys resources to benefit your corporations and to those neighboring states which historically fall under your influence. We have never asked you for your precious blood or ours, to us, all blood is precious even that of the your soldiers sent by your government to die not knowing what they were truly fighting for. This has to be addressed to the man who started this war, and is hiding now in Texas, while you try to undo his damage.
We the Iraqi People and their resistance demand the following:
1- The fulfillment of all the conditions presented to your government through the mediators you
Sent in 2006.
2- The hand over of all the traitors Collaborators in the green zone to the Iraqi people where
They will be dealt with as any nation would do with in cases of high treason.
3- The full just compensation for our people for the losses they have suffered.
4- The halting of all compensations paid to those who fall under your umbrella in the region from the resources of our people.
5- The return of all land stolen from our country.
6- The departure of all foreign corporations mainly in the sectors of energy, communication, infrastructure rebuilding, specifically those linked to Neocon interests. Our people are more than qualified to rebuild and operate our institutions.
7- The hand over of all mercenaries accused of killing innocent civilians mainly security contractors in Black Water and their CEO to be tried for murder.
8- All foreign advisors are to leave Iraq with your troops.
9- The dismantling of all militias equipped by your country and Iran together to shift the nature of battle towards the sectarian nature in order to allow your troops to concentrate on the major resistance activities in the central region of Iraq.
10- The halting of all support to the sectarian government elected in the orchestrated elections in the green zone.
11- The reduction of the influence of your Persian allies in Iraq which your previous government worked with in close conjunction and who continue to fund Al Qaeda on behalf of your intelligence agencys behalf.
12- The return to the old constitution of a unified Iraq. And the Upholding of new elections

The Iraqi people intend to be masters of their own house as they always have, and by following the plan you have declared, you have not yet fully understood Iraq well.
There are those who will claim, that a quick withdrawal from Iraq will cause civil war, and that is a possibility, but we would also like to clarify that the forces of the puppet government which has been equipped to defeat the resistance will not stand ground, nor will they block our efforts to liberate our cities one by one if we had to, and all the efforts of your collaborators to move to the north and south of the country and create their own federal states have been studied well for their weaknesses and will be crushed within a short period. The Declining of oil revenues, which we truly thank you for mentioning in your speech, will make it more difficult to fund your militarys operations in Iraq, and that is why the numbers of your troops is to be reduced. To match the income predicted from the oil projects sponsored by your corporations in the south and the oil theft operations run by your agent, Hamid Jaffar in the north of Iraq in collaboration with NGO oil of Norway, is what your strategists think is possible.
Yes President Obama, we do agree with you, that the US needs a smarter, more sustainable comprehensive approach, but rest assured, that what your predecessor has failed to achieve with all the military might at his disposal, we will make sure that you will fail to achieve the same goals through the soft hand of the Democratic party.

3- We embraced the war and continue the fight on behalf of all the oppressed world, which not only stood still and watched the massacre of our people and the illegal occupation of our nation, but many of its leaders participated and continue in harming our people inside and outside Iraq and assist in the theft of our resources. This, apart from the support of honest people all around the world,
4- including citizens of your country, who marched day and night to support the cause of Iraqs right to resist, marches that defied the weather, and weathered criminal defiance and ignorance of world politicians. Marches that we will ever be indebt to, and in gratitude in appreciation for. May god bless those people wherever they are. And this we fulfilled and continue to do so.
5- We have understood the nature of international balances of power and most importantly predicted the primitive mind of the occupation and played a major role in forcing the US to increase oil prices in clear desperation for cash. And use that to allow other powers to recover. And the numbers never lied, this we also fulfilled.
6- The Iraqi People wrote a new chapter in Urban warfare, and invented the art of remote combat, and in turn gave the world lessons and set a new standard in how to defeat the worlds most powerful army. In this, the most dangerous achievement that threatens US global influence is that all the oppressed people who suffer from negative US influence, can use this experience to free themselves as well. This also has been delivered.
7- The Resistance has already drafted its 2, 5 and 10 year plan to engage Iraq in rebuilding programs that will set a new standard for development in the Region and restore Iraq to its rightfully earned place in world politics and positive human development. This while maintaining Iraqs isolation from harmful neighboring countries at the same time, these plans was prepared and drafted in the early months of 2007 and are ready to implement once we see the end of your occupation.
8- The resistance created a new battle field and utilized every tool available to break free of the corporate media and tell, inform, and educate the world of the true nature of the struggle, and present every curious man and woman daily reports and videos of your militarys defeat and in every language possible. People from all over the world, chose out of their own free will and time, people of different religions and backgrounds chose to be soldiers of the cyber wars and translated all what we had to tell, asking nothing in return but the truth. 9- The resistance has sparked not only the collapse of the US economy, but also caused the domino effect and the destruction of your fine tuned and delicate Globalized economy, and forced the return to national economic protection, and the rights of local and regional economies to grow and ensure a decent life and practice their right to develop as well. You have inherited a nation at war, a failed economy, and a desperate people who are bearing the full brunt of an economic crisis that was not of their making. As well as thousands of young men dead and handicapped.
We have inherited a foreign occupation, endless counts of innocent dead, injured, and handicapped, millions of refugees, in essence, Mr. President, the complete and planned disintegration of our nation and people.
We believe that the funds wasted in this war would have been more useful if it were spent on research to develop alternative energy, which no doubt would have reduced energy conflicts, cures for cancer, agricultural solutions to prevent worldwide poverty, advancements to develop Africa, where people still die of starvation and intentional neglect. Endless causes, all in need of immediate attention.
By the will of God almighty, the resilience of our men, and the patience of our humble people, we have so far managed to halt and render useless all imperialist agendas set for Iraq and the region in whole. Simply by choosing to resist occupation, a right guaranteed by God first and then by international conventions to all men. A right your countrys policies continue to disrespect and dishonor, in clear example to state sponsored Terrorism.
You have spoken to our people in part of your speech, and we thank you for these words, you have displayed a far better understanding our nation, than your predecessor, who preferred to dive deep into the oceans of illiteracy and ignorance. Despite the fact that you did not mention the Iraqi resistance in your speech, and chose to label us as terrorists along with those who arrived with your troops, we will set that aside for now, and mention a few facts for the record.
1- The people of Iraq whom you addressed, in all their sects colors and religions, refuse your occupation, and those who accept it, are those who benefit from it.
2- The Iraqis you addressed, as we truly hope, are not the ones who bathe in the riches of treason, behind your walls of the green zone, nor are they the likes of Ahmed Al Chalabi, whom your previous government conspired with and his likes from the dark alleys of 5 star hotels in the US and Europe prior to your occupation.
3- The Iraqi people you talked to, are those who never invited your occupation, and were trying their best to survive on what was possible, under the criminal sanctions that went on for 13 years only to be crowned with a foreign occupation, unmatched in criminal acts, in todays modern world.
President Obama, The suffering, that our people had to go through is beyond comprehension. And the endless crimes of your troops as well as that of neighboring countries, cannot simply be undone or dismissed, nor can they be brushed under the carpet. Your troops still occupy the land and kill the innocent, that is why we can only address you as the president of an occupying nation.
The Iraqi People are disappointed in your plan. They expect your troops to leave our country in full and not in part. Our people, seek a complete end of occupation and not the fulfillment of a strategic treaty that was rushed against the will of our people, in the last few days of your predecessor.
Our people, as well as the majority of people around the world, and in your country, want to see the last president be presented to an international war crime tribunal for all the crimes he has committed in the name of your country, only to benefit those who brought him to power in the first place.
We have never invited your occupation, nor have we asked your country to steal our countrys resources to benefit your corporations and to those neighboring states which historically fall under your influence. We have never asked you for your precious blood or ours, to us, all blood is precious even that of the your soldiers sent by your government to die not knowing what they were truly fighting for. This has to be addressed to the man who started this war, and is hiding now in Texas, while you try to undo his damage.
We the Iraqi People and their resistance demand the following:
1- The fulfillment of all the conditions presented to your government through the mediators you
Sent in 2006.
2- The hand over of all the traitors Collaborators in the green zone to the Iraqi people where
They will be dealt with as any nation would do with in cases of high treason.
3- The full just compensation for our people for the losses they have suffered.
4- The halting of all compensations paid to those who fall under your umbrella in the region from the resources of our people.
5- The return of all land stolen from our country.
6- The departure of all foreign corporations mainly in the sectors of energy, communication, infrastructure rebuilding, specifically those linked to Neocon interests. Our people are more than qualified to rebuild and operate our institutions.
7- The hand over of all mercenaries accused of killing innocent civilians mainly security contractors in Black Water and their CEO to be tried for murder.
8- All foreign advisors are to leave Iraq with your troops.
9- The dismantling of all militias equipped by your country and Iran together to shift the nature of battle towards the sectarian nature in order to allow your troops to concentrate on the major resistance activities in the central region of Iraq.
10- The halting of all support to the sectarian government elected in the orchestrated elections in the green zone.
11- The reduction of the influence of your Persian allies in Iraq which your previous government worked with in close conjunction and who continue to fund Al Qaeda on behalf of your intelligence agencys behalf.
12- The return to the old constitution of a unified Iraq. And the Upholding of new elections
Within 6 months of the resistance taking power of the nation, this will be supervised,

13- Cities and provinces are to be handed over one by one starting with the four main cities and airports of Baghdad, Basra, then Mosul and Kirkuk in the same order. The rest will fall immediately in our hands. The borders will have other arrangements.

Without these straightforward moves on your part, we regret to inform you that the resistance of the people of Iraq will continue until that last boot of US/British/Persian occupation is thrown across the borders of our country.
If you choose change as you claim, then you must have reached the conclusion that to continue dealing with the same people your predecessor appointed to fulfill his dirty work, will fail to deliver positive results for both our people. It is not the thieves of the green zone who brought the defeat of your military.
You must search further for the honest Iraqis and from the ranks of our people and not those of your collaborators to achieve a just solution. You can also recognize the right for the Iraqi people to resist and publicly ask for our advice and representation. The Iraqi people intend to be masters of their own house as they always have, and by following the plan you have declared, you have not yet fully understood Iraq well.
There are those who will claim, that a quick withdrawal from Iraq will cause civil war, and that is a possibility, but we would also like to clarify that the forces of the puppet government which has been equipped to defeat the resistance will not stand ground, nor will they block our efforts to liberate our cities one by one if we had to, and all the efforts of your collaborators to move to the north and south of the country and create their own federal states have been studied well for their weaknesses and will be crushed within a short period. This is a more realistic scenario. True there will be still the Persian occupation which will offer its militias support, but we know that the US cannot leave the oil rich south to be occupied by Iran, and they would rather see it fall in our hands instead. As it would be giving too much to a close yet not so trust worthy ally, and would deprive your military necessary funds that would support long-term military presence necessary in Iraq and throughout the region. Funds that some in your government think they can still rely on. Funds that your economy can no longer bear in the midst of the turmoil in the globalized economy of your nation, to control the world.
The Iraqi resistance understands well that the US could not continue to sell oil at a high price
of 120 USD/Barrel to cover the costs of its war, as this strengthens old adversaries. And it would be only a matter of time before this tactic backfires on the US foreign policy. But it also understands that the US cannot fund foreign occupation any more without depending on local resources and revenues to cover the expenses. This is the true cause of the change of as you named it President Obama.
With oil prices falling to their true realistic market values, the winter ending in the consuming economies, the oil prices should fall to 30 USD plus mark, which is also effecting the local economies of your allies in the region, as anything below 55 USD per barrel, is already becoming a burden on these
economies, which in turn can no longer assist to their full potential in funding and supporting the costs of US aggression in the Region.
The Declining of oil revenues, which we truly thank you for mentioning in your speech, will make it more difficult to fund your militarys operations in Iraq, and that is why the numbers of your troops is to be reduced. To match the income predicted from the oil projects sponsored by your corporations in the south and the oil theft operations run by your agent, Hamid Jaffar in the north of Iraq in collaboration with NGO oil of Norway, is what your strategists think is possible.
Yes President Obama, we do agree with you, that the US needs a smarter, more sustainable comprehensive approach, but rest assured, that what your predecessor has failed to achieve with all the military might at his disposal, we will make sure that you will fail to achieve the same goals through the soft hand of the Democratic party.
In fact, it is more logical and practical to follow the alternative energy programs that you have set wisely, to ensure the non reliance of your economy on oil as well as the utilization of advancements and added fruits of R D to employ the unemployed, and support a new and young market for the shift in energy dependence, and in turn end the monopolization of energy, practiced by the corporations that control it and control world political and social stability, than to merely dream of expecting the Iraqi People to hand you over their resources.
We on the other hand intend to nationalize and use our resources to build an alternative energy base our selves and offer our people a life of prosperity, stability, as well as supporting the energy transition of other nations that are oil dependant, a task we truly believe is noble and worthwhile.
The Iraqi Resistance will not accept any short term or long term energy contracts with the US until we ensure that the rights of our people are properly addressed. And within the parameters of relations based on mutual respect first and mutual interests second.
President Obama, It is time that people in Washington understand that there are no shared interest between an occupying tyrant and an oppressed victim of occupation.
Your government would have stayed forever in Iraq if the traitors who conspired with your consecutive administrations had their way in starving the Iraqi people into submission and force them to welcome your occupying troops with flowers as Chalabi promised you. But after three wars and over a decade of sanctions, there were enough honest men to defeat the worlds most powerful army play a major role in destroying the most imperialistic Globalized economy ever developed by expansionary capitalism.
These are the type of people you are speaking to Mr. Obama. And if you were not presented with this reality throughout the briefings that occurred, and understood the true scale of the economic disaster with all the social and geopolitical implications of your military defeat in Iraq, then please allow us to mention a few of the major achievements that the Iraqi Resistance have promised its people and the free people of the world and has delivered:
1- We promised to pin down your troops in Iraq and drain your economy until you admit defeat and withdraw your troops. And this we fulfilled.
2- We promised to halt the US plan for Middle East in full, and prevent the loss of other innocent lives in other neighboring countries, and that we fulfilled.
3- We embraced the war and continue the fight on behalf of all the oppressed world, which not only stood still and watched the massacre of our people and the illegal occupation of our nation, but many of its leaders participated and continue in harming our people inside and outside Iraq and assist in the theft of our resources. This, apart from the support of honest people all around the world,
4- including citizens of your country, who marched day and night to support the cause of Iraqs right to resist, marches that defied the weather, and weathered criminal defiance and ignorance of world politicians. Marches that we will ever be indebt to, and in gratitude in appreciation for. May god bless those people wherever they are. And this we fulfilled and continue to do so.
5- We have understood the nature of international balances of power and most importantly predicted the primitive mind of the occupation and played a major role in forcing the US to increase oil prices in clear desperation for cash. And use that to allow other powers to recover. And the numbers never lied, this we also fulfilled.
6- The Iraqi People wrote a new chapter in Urban warfare, and invented the art of remote combat, and in turn gave the world lessons and set a new standard in how to defeat the worlds most powerful army. In this, the most dangerous achievement that threatens US global influence is that all the oppressed people who suffer from negative US influence, can use this experience to free themselves as well. This also has been delivered.
7- The Resistance has already drafted its 2, 5 and 10 year plan to engage Iraq in rebuilding programs that will set a new standard for development in the Region and restore Iraq to its rightfully earned place in world politics and positive human development. This while maintaining Iraqs isolation from harmful neighboring countries at the same time, these plans was prepared and drafted in the early months of 2007 and are ready to implement once we see the end of your occupation.
8- The resistance created a new battle field and utilized every tool available to break free of the corporate media and tell, inform, and educate the world of the true nature of the struggle, and present every curious man and woman daily reports and videos of your militarys defeat and in every language possible. People from all over the world, chose out of their own free will and time, people of different religions and backgrounds chose to be soldiers of the cyber wars and translated all what we had to tell, asking nothing in return but the truth. The true casualties of your war are yet to be declared. (We refer to the green card soldiers)
9- The resistance has sparked not only the collapse of the US economy, but also caused the domino effect and the destruction of your fine tuned and delicate Globalized economy, and forced the return to national economic protection, and the rights of local and regional economies to grow and ensure a decent life and practice their right to develop as well. All your efforts to restore the globalized economy will deliver nothing of value, and puppet governments that maintain your oversight of world resources will eventually fall, one after the other, as their faults will be more evident to their average citizens, and that is why you are now receiving daily reports, from the CIA about the world economy.
ALL THE ABOVE, AND YOU STILL CHOOSE TO IGNORE THE RESISTANCE OF THE IRAQI PEOPLE AND THE RESISTANCE OF THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE OF THE FREE, WHICH WE INTENT TO PROPOSE TO THE WORLD AS THE NEXT STAGE OF FREEING THE PLANET FROM YOUR DOMINENCE WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT.
ALL THIS SAID, AND THE GLOBAL MEDIA WHICH YOU STILL MAINTAIN CONTROL OVER STILL LABELS FREE PEOPLE AS TERRORISTS AND EQUALS THE RESISTANCE OF OCCUPATION WITH CRIMINAL ACTS OF STRIKING CIVILIANS IN BUILDING AND TERRORISING THE LIVES OF THE INNOCENT.
TRULY IRONIC !! Nevertheless represents the true state of shock you policy makers have reached. But all can be reversed if you truly believe in Change Mr. President.

Who brought you to power, are more than capable to pull you down and defeat your new strategy, if you choose to lie to them and follow the plans of your predecessor.
You must understand that the time when your foreign policy bullied and bribed people into submission is over and for a considerable time. And your politicians and strategists have to understand that to be accepted as a superpower you must first learn to speak to the world with modesty and respect that others in this planet, also have the right to provide for their families a decent life, the right to food and water, the right to education and knowledge, the right to industry and employment, and free from your corporate despotism.
We in the Iraqi resistance, renew our pledge to our people and to our brothers and sisters in the global family, to continue the fight and struggle to free Iraq and give our allies the chance to follow suite.
While you were preparing your new strategy in leaving the streets and highways of Iraq to your collaborators, and hiding your troops behind the walls of the castles and green zones you have prepared for your minimized long term presence, we have been preparing to address your new tactics and will deal with them in the proper manner.
Remember, that hiding behind and holding castles is no longer sustainable in modern warfare!
Your finest fighting force as you name it, is up against the most witty, resilient innovative self-propelled resistance honorable humanity has ever presented. Rest assured that we are not impressed with your plan and will follow your movements on the ground and cross examine them to your declared intentions and daily economic reports. The inclusion on a public registry of all children who are adjudicated delinquent of certain sex offenses is fraught with problems that undermine both the history of the juvenile court system and the purpose of the Adam Walsh Act. It ignores the very foundation of this countrys juvenile court system: a belief, confirmed by scientific research, that children can and should be rehabilitated. And it dilutes the effectiveness of the public registry as a public safety tool, by flooding it with thousands of juvenile offenders, 9096 percent of whom will never commit another sex offense.
Juveniles who are amenable to treatment and who are successfully rehabilitated have no place on a public registry of violent adult sex offenders. Those who interact with each child individuallyjuvenile court personnel working in conjunction with treatment providersshould continue to be allowed to determine whether a childs offense was a youthful indiscretion, a manifestation of a mental illness or other behavioral health problem, or a sign of a child who is not amenable to treatment and who poses an ongoing threat to public safety.
Including children on an internet-based registry also puts those children at risk of being targeted for harassment and abuse. A pedophile could use the online registry to find victims. The registry will provide him with the names, pictures, and home addresses for children as young as 14, as well as the names of the schools they attend, the cars they drive, their license plate numbers, and other identifying information. Many juvenile sex offenders were themselves victims before they committed their offenses, and are especially vulnerable to further victimization.
Additionally, many juvenile sex offenses are intra-familial. During deliberations in the Ohio General Assembly on SB 10, testimony was heard from several parents with a child who sexually offended on a sibling. Those parents testified about the conflicts they face, as parents of both a juvenile sex offender and a victim of sexual abuse. In these situations, the offender and the victim receive much-needed treatment only if their parents are willing to speak up and seek help. Undoubtedly, many parents will be unwilling to ask for help if doing so resigns one child to a lifetime of inclusion on an internet-based registry, with all the restrictions on schooling, employment, and residency it entails, as well as potential threats to that childs safety. As a result, in many instances, neither offender nor victim will receive the treatment they need.
The risk of mandatory, lifetime inclusion on a public registry will also mean that children facing charges for sex offenses will be less likely to plead guilty and more likely to go to trial, thus exposing the victim and others to the trauma of testifying and to other intrusive aspects of the criminal justice system. And childrens defense counsel will certainly work to get sex offense charges reduced to non-sex offense charges, such as assault, in order to avoid the severe consequences of lifetime inclusion on the public registry. But a child adjudicated delinquent for assault is unlikely to receive sex offender treatment, which results in tremendous lost opportunities for treatment and the prevention of further harm.
The list of offenses to be included on the public registry may seem to target only the worst of the worst of juvenile sex offenders. But in Ohio, the offenses recognized as equating to the federal definition of aggravated sexual abuserape, sexual battery, and gross sexual impositioninclude a wide range of behaviors.
Several years ago, my office represented a 16-year-old boy. On the school bus, Brian sat next to a 15-year-old girl whom he had dated previously. He touched his former girlfriends breasts through her clothes, and attempted, unsuccessfully, to put his hand down her pants. The girl testified at trial that Brian had put his hand down her pants bout to the knuckle line. Brian was adjudicated delinquent for attempted rape and gross sexual imposition.
In another example of a client my office represented, a 14-year-old boy, and several other children had been at a friends house without parental supervision. Zach and some of the boys had stolen bottles of alcohol, and the girls had set up a tent in the yard. At some point in the evening, Zach and a 10-year-old girl, who had become boyfriend and girlfriend earlier that day, were lying on their sides next to each other in the tent. He put his arm over the girls midsection and touched her below her beltline but did not put his hand in between her legs. Zach was adjudicated delinquent for gross sexual imposition on a victim under the age of 13.
My office also represented whose case highlights many of the problems typically found in juvenile courts. Michael was removed from his mothers custody at the age of 11, after being physically abused, and over the next several years was placed in seven different foster homes. He is very low-functioning and has been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder, extreme mood swings, and reactive attachment disorder. Despite this, Michael was adjudicated delinquent for gross sexual imposition without being represented by counsel. Michael certainly should have been evaluated for his competency to face the GSI complaint, but he had no attorney to raise the issue, and Ohio lacks a competency statute for juveniles.
The Adam Walsh Act purports to protect society from dangerous sexual predators, like the adult pedophiles, unknown to their victims, who kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered Adam Walsh, Jacob Wetterling, Jessica Lunsford, and the other children for whom the legislation is named. But, with the overly broad requirements of the Adam Walsh Act and Ohios SB 10, Ohioans instead find themselves from children like Brian, Zach, and Michael.
The year that Ohio implemented the Adam Walsh Act also marked the 40th anniversary of In re Gault, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that granted many basic due process rights to children in juvenile court, including the right to advance notice of the charges, the right to a fair and impartial hearing, and the right to be represented by counsel. But Gault did not grant full due process protections to juveniles facing delinquency complaints. Notably absent are a childs right to a grand jury determination of probable cause and the right to an open and speedy trial by jury. And, at least in Ohio, juveniles have yet to fully realize the promises of Gault. A recent study found that two-thirds of children facing unruly or delinquency complaints are not represented by counsel when they appear in Ohios juvenile courts.
The failure to fully protect juveniles constitutional rights is certainly not limited to Ohio. Last month, two Luzerne County, Pennsylvania judges pled guilty to receiving $2.6 million in kickbacks to send juveniles to certain juvenile detention facilities. A lawsuit filed by the Juvenile Law Center on behalf of 70 families affected by this scandal alleges that the two judges violated the rights of juveniles in ways that went beyond the kickback scheme.10 The lawsuit asserts that in a wave of unprecedented lawlessness, the judges failed to advise youth of their right to counsel, accepted their guilty pleas without explaining the charges against them, and garnished the wages of their parents to pay the costs of detention. If Pennsylvania were to adopt the Adam Walsh Acts overly broad offense-based system, some of these youth, forced to enter admissions to sexual offenses in courts that showed complete disregard for their constitutional rights, would automatically be labeled Tier III and subject to lifetime registration and notification.
The Guidelines for implementation, issued by the SMART Office, instruct that registration need not be required on the basis of a foreign conviction if the conviction was not obtained with sufficient safeguards for fundamental fairness and due process The Guidelines fail to acknowledge, however, that only limited due process protections are offered to children in juvenile court. By placing juvenile sex offenders on a public registry, the Adam Walsh Act imposes adult sanctions on juvenile defendants. It treats a select group of children who appear in juvenile court differently than other children who appear in juvenile court; it treats them more like adult sex offenders than like children. And it does so without regard to the limited due process protections offered to children in juvenile court.
Limited due process protections make the retroactive application of the Adam Walsh Act especially inappropriate for juveniles. Children who have already been through the juvenile court systemwithout full due process protections and perhaps without even being represented by counselcould never have anticipated that lifetime inclusion on a public registry would someday be a consequence of their juvenile court proceeding.
Recognizing the unique qualities and needs of children, the juvenile court system was established to focus on treatment, supervision, and control, rather than solely on punishment. Inclusion on a public registry, though, will significantly limit treatment and aftercare options for juvenile sex offenders. Many group homes, foster homes, and community placements will not accept children with sex offenses in their histories. Children on a public registry with community notification requirements will be nearly impossible to place for or after treatment. As a result, many juvenile sex offenders will be kept in juvenile correctional facilities far beyond the time it takes them to complete treatment. Children will be incarcerated not because they need further treatment or pose a risk to public safety, but only because public policy will prevent them from going anywhere else. This is a dramatic, and ill-advised, shift in the focus of the juvenile court system from treatment to punishment.
Subjecting juvenile sex offenders to the same sanctions as adults raises legal and scientific questions about culpability and punishment, and the registration and notification requirements are inconsistent with the purposes of juvenile court: treatment and rehabilitation. Inclusion on an internet-based public registry will subject juveniles to social ostracism, limit access to educational and work opportunities, make it more difficult for juveniles to be placed with family or friends, and limit residential treatment options. And treating juvenile sex offenders in the same manner as adult sex offenders with respect to reporting, notification, and length of classification, even though juveniles have fewer legal rights and protections than adults, presents legal and Constitutional problems.
The plain language of the Adam Walsh Act requires that all children age 14 and older who are adjudicated delinquent for offenses comparable to or more severe than aggravated sexual abuse be included on the public, online registry of sex offenders. But the negative consequences of doing sofewer intra-familial crimes being reported, fewer offenders and victims receiving treatment, and children on the registry being targeted for abuse and exploitation, to name only a fewwould actually put states out of compliance with the stated intent of the Adam Walsh Act: protecting children from violent sex offenders.

Martin: I wouldn’t know, but I’m glad I’m of some use.

Martin: I am sure you’ve experienced this question before, and who hasn’t, but I will try to make it as interesting as I can. What is your great contribution to our humble world?
Elyse: I don’t get it; you mean what do I do?
Martin: (Nods)
Elyse: Oh, I am a beauty consultant for a modeling agency; don’t know if you’ve heard of it – Slim and Slender?
Martin: Right.
Elyse: Yeah, I mostly deal with make-up and skincare.
Martin: How did you get into beauty consultation?
… After an hour and twenty minutes of two cocktails, endless probing questions by Martin and Elyse asking no personal questions in return; Martin will ask the most penetrating question that will pierce right through the date for these two. He gazes at his watch and proceeds…
Martin: How would like to go to a club? I have some friends that are meeting up in central.
Elyse: No thanks, I should really be getting home; I had a nice time though. I will call you sometime.
Martin: Why not?
Elyse: It’s just getting late you know, I have arrangements for tomorrow morning, and I’ve a long day.
Martin: Oh come on, a couple of hours won’t hurt. Plus you’ve got nothing to lose, you’ll meet new people, go to a lively environment, you won’t even feel your fatigue. I promise to get you back home a.s.a.p. to sleep in time for tomorrow.
Elyse: Really, Martin, thank you but I’d rather go home and spend the night in.
Martin: Come on, don’t be boring, and live on the edge a little. Come out and have a great time.
Elyse: You agree that all night I’ve asked you no questions, I’m sure you’ve wondered why; after all you appear to be an astute fellow.
Martin: …
Elyse: So here is my first and only question of the night to you, Martin. From this, I will know all I need to know about you – or maybe I already know who you are and what you are about, and this is just me seeking an affirmation. Tell me Martin, why do you really want me to come clubbing with you?
At this point Martin is flabbergasted, unaware of where that came from and fully aware of the intention. He sweats ever so slightly but inside he is steaming, he knows not what to say.
Martin: … I want you to come out and have some fun with me and a couple of mates; that’s all.
Elyse: Have fun with you and your friends? Or you hoping that they will sell you to me; tell me how great a lover and person you are. Or maybe your friends are just an excuse and you just want to have some fun with me?
Martin: … No.
Elyse: Listen, I am not stupid, I would have thought that my having no alcohol the whole night was obvious enough. I know what you want and I know what I don’t – you are the latter. Nevertheless I want to be sure, so answer my question, why do you want me to come out clubbing with you?
Martin: I…
Mr. Jabin: …Want to sleep with you.
Elyse Martin: …
Mr. Jabin: My apologies, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but my dear you changed your tone so much and with such assured aggression that one cannot be blamed for their inappropriate interest. Anyways, I am Mr. Jabin; kids call me Mr. J – makes it easier.
Elyse: Elyse.
Martin: Martin.
Mr. J: Well, Elyse, Martin, I was wondering if I may buy you two another round? You both fascinate me and I wish to talk to you on the duration of the round. Elyse you’re drinking a bloody Mary right? And Martin, you’re enjoying a Mojito?
Elyse: Yes, virgin bloody Mary, thank you but I was about leave.
Martin: Mojito Royal, thank you but I think I should get going, I am meeting my friends in a half hour.
Mr. J: Virgin bloody Mary, now there’s something you don’t hear everyday, and Mojito Royal, I wonder what the difference is. Anyways, I urge you guys to stay just for this drink; you may enjoy what I have to say. The duration is entirely up to you, after all, it’s only one drink, and then you can leave. I even promise to pay for both your cabs.
Elyse: I don’t know…
Martin: You’ve got half an hour from me.
Elyse: Alright, I’ll stay too. What have you got to say old man?
Mr. J: Excellent. I must say, I was inspired by your honesty Elyse, and your forward yet reserved attitude with Martin. Martin, I was fascinated by your guile and subtlety; it was obvious that you cared about Elyse’s feelings. Yet both of you are here, both hoping for something, both carrying something with you and both attempting to get or achieve something. I will talk for a while because you’ve limited my time, so please I urge you to stop me if you feel that you need to say something. Was this supposed to be a date?
Elyse: Yes.
Mr. J: Then it clearly didn’t go very well, or rather as you both have hoped it would go?
Martin: No.
Mr. J: I see, so this is what you hoped for – that the date would go well, yet at the same time it isn’t what you hoped for is it guys? You both had different ideas of what you hoped would happen. Martin had a different picture of you before he came here and as did you Elyse, otherwise you would have not agreed to the date.
Elyse: …
Mr. J: Here’s what I think guys. You’ll both go away and think about this date. This is elementary stuff, you both know this. Both of you are affected by this encounter. Both, I would say, are disappointed by it. Yet, will any of you two ask yourselves why? Perhaps you both will and settle with the answer, “It’s her”, or “It’s him”. Once you’ve made this claim, there are two ways you can go, either, it’s ‘her’ or ‘him’ just the once, or it’s every ‘her’ or every ‘him’. You’ll both, or one of you, eventually come to the conclusion that it is the counterpart’s fault, due to the frequency of the encounters – due to the fact that it happens all the time and with many others.
Elyse Martin: …
Mr. J: There will be one of you, and I am willing to place my money on Elyse at the moment, although this is usually Martin’s question, who will ask eventually “what if it’s me?”, and from that moment a whole new world unfolds. From there, the person that asks, either changes for the good or the worse. We shall not consider that phenomenon as that would take much too long. Yet, I want to bring this back to why this failed. If I ask you why, you would both say that it is because you are incompatible, or that the other is x, y and z negative things. I will boldly say however, that you are both wrong. Incompatibility is an illusion, and, x, y and z are false judgments.
Elyse: What?
Martin: What the hell?
Mr. J: Exactly. I thought the same when I first heard these words; allow me to elaborate. Let’s ask you then, Elyse do you like to be happy, to laugh, to be loved and to feel that you are successful in what you do?
Elyse: Yes, of course.
Mr. J: I see, how about you Martin?
Martin: Yeah, definitely.
Mr. J: So you both want the same things. I ask you then, where is the incompatibility in this picture? If you both want the same things out of life, why would you ever feel that you are incompatible? It is not incompatibility, even if you show me something less universal and more particular about your desires that makes for incompatibility, it is still not the reason why this date failed. Again I will not go down the road of more particular desires and incompatibility, because that is a question regarding relationships, and this is merely a date. It isn’t judgments either; none of you have known the other long enough to make a real and concrete judgment about the other that stands. Even if you did, I would challenge you to think about the notion of change; no judgment about a human beings personality is concrete, because that person can change. If it is none of these obvious and common things, then what is it? Why does most dating go wrong and rarely breed that most desired emotion of ours called love?
Martin: What if we do not care and just wish to move on with our lives without pondering on things so deeply? You know, some of us just don’t have the time to think about these things.
Mr. J: True, very true. You’ve spoken like a modern man; I respect your insufficient time to ponder on these problems. Tell me though Martin, how many hours a day do you spend thinking about these things, thinking about encounters with women; and with your friends, what you do talk to them about. Tell me, how long did you spend thinking about your last failed date, and how much time did you waste on recurring thoughts that did nothing for you but inspire emotions you couldn’t control or you didn’t want? They say 98% of our thinking is useless.
Martin: I never saw it like that.
Mr. J: The same goes to you too Elyse, unfortunately nobody is exempt from this, me included – obviously. We waste time thinking about our opposite sex, yet our thinking is never constructive, all we do is feed the already apparent polemos between the sexes. Polemos means war in Greek; I really like the word, there’s an elegance to it.
Elyse: It’s true; all women converse about is men and they’re always asking each other ‘why did he say this, what did he mean; or why doesn’t he do this or that’?
Mr. J: Exactly.
Martin: Men too, but we don’t really ask that many questions about women; some of us though, just say nothing because we don’t have anything to say, or boast about our encounters. Makes most of us who are not that good with women feel inferior, and so we desire to be like the boasters. The only way we know to do this is through thought, we think situations to the bone, and we bleed them dry with alternate scenarios and fantasies – the ones amongst us who can think anyway, the ones that can’t just settle for calling women sluts or bitches and moving on.
Mr. J: It is curious indeed. The one thing we desire the most and spend most of our time thinking about, we can’t get right. We are truly ignorant. The boasters you mention Martin, or rather and more accurately the ones who are good with women, fall under two categories: the liars, which is self-explanatory, and the lovers - although I would not expect a true lover to boast about his encounters with women. The latter are the more interesting, for they have mastered this realm we call dating with their seductive ways. For true lovers though, theres something sacred between them and the feminine, a bond that they cannot explain and wish to not explain lest they lose it. They are master seducers, geniuses of the art of love – the one first brought forward by an illustrious Roman called Ovid. There is way too much to say about lovers, I wish not to go down that road. Instead I want to tell you guys bluntly, that dating doesn’t work. It is not your fault Elyse that Martin wants to have sex with you, and it is not your fault Martin that Elyse doesn’t want to see you again. Both of these dilemmas stem from a broken arrow, an arrow that is meant to represent the traditional and straight movement that a man should follow when he is to meet a woman – the arrow of courting. This arrow does not serve its purpose anymore, it cannot pierce a heart and cause love, it pierces a heart and causes misery, pain and polemos – after all arrows are meant for war. Unfortunately, courting is broken, it is wrong, and it doesn’t work anymore. You simply cannot court a woman from the off, wooing is reserved for a time where wooing was rare. Wooing a woman from the off will only succeed if she is not really a woman.
Elyse: But I want to be wooed.
Mr. J: Of course you do, only a fool would deny that, it is not what I was implying. Rather, who would you prefer to be wooed by, somebody you know well and you like, or a stranger you just met?
Elyse: Somebody I know well.
Mr. J: Precisely; and Martin is a stranger you just met. Nonetheless, back to courting. Courting has one intention, sex. No courting would happen if sex was possible without it. The meta-reason for courting is sex, regardless of the other reasons that stem or arise from it, such as love, marriage, relationship etc. There is an order of primacy here. The main motive for courting is sex. You both know this, if not consciously then unconsciously, that you’re both here tonight to negotiate sex; as if sex needs negotiation. You both want it and that is true, almost every human being wants sex at some point in their life, because if human beings didn’t want sex and were happy in themselves, then human beings wouldn’t exist. If I could have sex with myself and be satisfied, then there would be no need for you dear Elyse. So courting is about sex, and that means a date is about sex too. You’re both here carrying something, and that thing is this idea that this could lead to sex, and you both want sex otherwise you wouldn’t agree to be here tonight. The reasons why are not for this post.
Elyse: Wow, you think really deeply.
Martin: Yeah, is this healthy?
Mr. J: (Smiles). You’re both here to negotiate sex. Martin is here to get laid and Elyse is here to get laid too, but Elyse has more to guard against (and more options). She has to guard herself against the non-thinkers you mentioned before Martin, the boasters too; not to mention other girls and their words full of . She is afraid of many things, things that you wouldn’t understand, because you’d have to experience them, as her, to be able to unfold them in such a way that you would understand them fully. All you can do is manipulate the situation and work around it (which is what the lovers do), never understanding it in its totality, for that you would need a revelation, an unfolding; and you cannot unfold what it is like to be Elyse without actually being her. Anyways, I digress, back to the point. Elyse has many things to guard herself against, and the situation she finds herself in is not exactly one that she finds easy to do that with. She is aware of what you are expecting Martin, she is aware of your presuppositions, your assumptions, about her coming on a date with you; she is after all, a rational being.
Martin: It is true, I was attracted to Elyse, but I didn’t want to sleep with her… see I can’t even say that because I did want to sleep with her; but not straight away you… I can’t say that either because I do… Damn you old man, I’m digging myself a hole here and you’re not helping.
Mr. J. Elyse: (Laughter)
Elyse: No he’s right, I was fully aware that you wanted to sleep with me, I’m not an idiot, and it’s precisely why I came here tonight and let you court me – I was attracted to you too and I knew exactly how far we could go in my mind, but it didn’t go according to mind or rather it went as I would have expected. I was trying to make it obvious to you that I wasn’t going to be that easy, by acting disinterested and also not drinking alcohol; even the drink I bought was thought out. All was to show that yes I am interested but you have a lot of work to do if you are to get what you want. I did all this however, not realizing that it is what I wanted too, but… I don’t know what to say because anything I say will be an excuse or a masquerade for the fact that I wanted to sleep with you too. Mr. J is right. The thing is, we want sex too, so badly, but we are afraid of all the consequences that come with it, and for us there are many more than there are for you guys. I think that is why I am like this, but I don’t wish to be. I dont sit there and think this through, no, it is a feeling more than anything - so ingrained in me that I dont even notice it; its like second nature to me.
Martin: Wow, I never saw it like that. I am stunned. Here I was thinking all along that women are like this by nature, thinking that they don’t like sex as much as guys; or they are naturally annoying about it, but in reality they’re not. I see now that men brought this to themselves. Why didn’t I see this before…
Mr. J: It is truly remarkable viewing the faces of people who witness for the first time an aspect of themselves they did not know was there. The look on their eyes is at first one of horror, then this moves into despair as they begin to reminisce the countless times they’ve entered experiences without realizing that this aspect was ruling their actions unconsciously. Finally, after this turbulent and albeit painful catharsis, you witness a freedom and wonder in their eyes, as if they have gained their innocence back somehow, or almost as if they’ve winded back a few years right there and then.
Elyse: I don’t know what to say…
Martin: Me neither, I came here tonight to meet a girl; I ended up meeting myself.
Mr. J: There is so much more to say, but I think the rest of it you can both think for yourselves. After all, I cannot give you it all, some revelation is required on your part through your own thoughts and experiences. Time is up, I have done my bit here, and I’m eternally grateful for your time. Now, the stage was set. We had land, water, the sky, heat and light, and our first invention, a way for whatever creatures we would invent to reproduce and have a great time doing so. Now, we were ready to develop the actual creatures who would inhabit the invention. Today we were scheduled to start with the ones that would go in the water and air.
I want to congratulate everybody for your work so far. Its because of your dedication and contributions that we can now invent the creatures who will inhabit the universe. I understand you brought some prototypes.Yes, I did. I thought some samples would be helpful.Excellent. Is there any special way youd like to proceed?Actually, there is.How so?From the bottom up.s the bottom?t we say the water would go where its low?Yes, we did.So what could be lower than the bottom of the water?Not much, at least, as far as creatures are concerned.Good. Then lets follow your lead and start there. What do you have?To get things started, hot water.Way down there? I didnt know the heat were putting way up in the sky would get down that far?It doesnt. This heat comes from way down under.Can you elaborate?Sure. When the original agglomerations we decided to call planets take shape, theyre really hot items. In fact, during the first few billion years or so, you wouldnt want to sit down on one.That hot, huh?Enough to melt steel.So what happens?What else? Over the millennia, they cool down, I mean, at least on the surface, or else where are the creatures going to be comfortable?Got ya.I see where youre going. Theres still heat toward the middle that finds its way out.Right. And, of course, that leads to hot water!Which facilitates the socializing of the atoms and molecules.Ah, ha! So we have a hot time in the old water tonight.If you need to look at it that way. Anyway, the waters boiling hot, the atoms and the molecules are rubbing up against each other and combining this way and that. And out of this really happening whirlpool bath of attraction and repulsion we get molecular couples, families, extended families, etc.And then?Eventually, they combine into creatures that are just right for the environment.Got a name for that?Yeah. We call it Survival Of The Ones That Fit.Sounds right. Go on.Mind if I go to the tank?Please. But Id like to move through this aspect of creatures. Im looking forward to inventing the ones that go on land. I understand we plan to make some of them intelligent enough to understand a bit about what we plan to accomplish. Now, mustnt jump ahead. The ones that go in the water and in the sky are every bit as important.Fine. Tech will be tech. Go ahead.Here we have something that actually lives under the bottom. Under it?What? You want to waste all that room?No way. I want creatures wherever they can fit.s the principle were working with down in the lab: maximum appropriate variety.My sentiments exactly. What do you call that creature?A sandworm. Of course, there are different kinds, but lets just group them under the heading 'sandworms.'ve also got all kinds of sand bugs.I might have guessed. I think we can allow you to work out the details on those. Just stay pretty much with six legs for all those whatchamacallits?"

"Sounds like a good mix. Whats next?Well, right here we have, as youll notice, a prototype thats standing on the bottom without moving.What do you call that?Actually, we have two types. This green one thats just standing around is a typical example of what we decided to call a plant, in this case, seaweed. But notice this other critter thats just standing on the rock, waving its colorful arms. It may look like a plant, but actually its what we intend to call an animal.No kidding? I thought only plants were just going to stand around?That was the original concept, but we thought about it and decided, Hey, why not have some rudimentary creatures that just sort of stand around, too?Seems that there should be a place for such creatures. How does that one function?See the tiny wavy things?re called cilia. We talked about those when we discussed reproduction. Remember?"

It pokes out of the shell and kind of muscles its way around.Interesting concept. Whats that creature crawling around on the bottom?We call that a lobster.Why is that?You see these sharp, two-fingered hands? They use them to lob food around. Ergo, lobsters.How can something that moves that slow possibly get food?The plan is it eats things that fall to the bottom.Dead things?I asked you not to use that word. Remember, anything that lives never dies. It just completes its life.How about just ends itWhatever, as long as you dont say What an injustice to the whole process. As the creatures live, they save their lives. So they dont just die. Got it?Yes, boss. Sorry about that.Please, go on.OK. So this guy or gal just crawls around on the bottom and eats things that fall there.You seem to have this part of the water pretty much under control. Can we move on from the bottom?I have a few more things to cover.Sounds like more detail work. Take care of it down in the lab.No problem. Next, we have the things that get around by the process I noted at an earlier meeting, called Anybody need a review?I think we all remember. You can continue.OK. See all these colorful little guys and gals. Theyre what we call fish.Yeah. Its a combo we worked out from the wish that we could come up with creatures that can move through the water really fast, even though it's quite thick, say, in comparison with air. Except when you get to most of the biggest creatures in the water.What happens then?They move their tails up and down. We thought it was a necessary variation.ll go along with that. You were talking about developing a way for the creatures in the water to breathe. Howd you manage that?Gil had an insight, so we call it gills. Let me take this little fella out and demonstrate for a moment. Excuse me, hes kind of feisty. Got ya! OK, now look here. See these little red things just behind its head.Yeah. Those the gills?How do they work?The fish uses its mouth and these flaps to move water over them, and the little red wonders nip out the O2 and give back CO2.Which the plants in the water cant wait to breathe in?Exactamundo! Now, I can go into detail as long as you want me to, but thats basically what happens in the water. Just let me remind you about the stuff that floats on it. Remember plankton?Who could forget? We know. Elemental teamwork with the creatures that breathe in O2 and breathe out CO2. It breathes in CO2 and sends out O2.Right. A lot, too, because there's going to be a lot of it. So let me recap. The whole shebang starts in hot water. Then we get creatures that inhabit every possible nook and cranny that can support them under the bottom, on the bottom, above the bottom, and right on top. Am I right?That about covers it. Of course, as the atoms and molecules respond, they can create quite an array of creatures. Our thoughts are still taking shape but overall we plan to provide for a perfectly flexible response, which, of course, would lead to perfectly appropriate variety. At least, thats the plan. All the life that fits. Excellent. So have we covered the water creatures sufficiently?Almost. We still have to talk about the creatures that swim on top of it and fly over it. That, of course, brings us to the air creatures. What do you call those?Collectively, birds. These we named water birds.They can actually float on the water and fly up into the sky? How so?Let me move to the birdcage. Excuse me. I put this cover on them to keep them quiet. See. The plan is that they develop these big flat hands that they wave back and forth. In the process, they beat against the air and the air beats back.Sort of like the way swimming works?Yeah, only a lighter take on it.But how do they stay up there? Looks like a pretty plump critter just to be flitting around in the sky.That was a real brain teaser. But we finally realized two things. First, we could give the air creatures hollow bones, which would be much lighter.Good thought.Yeah, but it still wasnt quite enough. The thick hair that was intended to keep them warm weighed them down.What hair? I don't see any of the usual type. I see you noticed. We developed this special kind of hair that would be lighter. Interesting. But how so lighter? The strands look much thicker.Yeah, but the main part is hollow.Like the bones?Right. We call them feathers.Feathers, as in?Flying in all kinds of weather.Makes sense. I assume at some point they get tired of flying around?"
"Yes, they do."
"What do they do at that point."
"Land."
"I know we have land. I mean, what do they do? Come down onto the land?"
"Or the water. Either one. Oh, I should mention where they eat."
"I assume when they're not flying around?"
"Not necessarily. Remember I said we had bugs that go under the bottom of the water. Well, we also have bugs that go just about everywhere."
"Don't tell me, even in the sky?"
"Yeah. Wherever the little buggers can find a livable niche."
"And the birds can catch them even when they're both flying around?"
"Yeah. The aeronautical math was a bit challenging, but we were able to work out how the bird and the bug could intersect, even when the bug was doing everything possible to avoid the conjunction. Of course, life won't always be that challenging. The birds and the bugs will also be able to alight here and there and chow down."
"Sounds advisable. Anything else?
Well, at some point we have to get creatures onto the land, and we thought, Wow, why not tap into the creatures that are already in the water?Seems like the right tactic. But I think that moves us into the next meeting the land creatures. Agreed?Inspired work. Really. Tell the people in tech I commend them."
"Thanks. I'll be sure to forward you compliment."
"Seems to me we now have a good handle on creatures that go in the water and the sky. Lets adjourn for today. Tomorrow, we do the land creatures.
So now we had made the big transition from setting the stage to starting to populate it. We had the water and the sky behind us, and the land creatures were just ahead. I kept wondering, What could go on the land thats different from what we invented to go in the water and the sky? Oh, I suppose the unique attributes of life on land would do a lot to guide our thinking.

"Are you stalking me?" Zion smiled then shook the extended hand.
"No. I told mom and a friend that I saw you at the shelter and mom said I should invite you out to dinner and I said I would if I met you again."
"So is that the invitation?"
"Wait, I can do this better. Zion, would you and Sky have dinner with me one evening?"
"That's nice of you Rusty. I would and I'm pretty sure that Sky would also. Where and when?" Zion said ignoring a woman who was watching her a short distance away. The woman was on a cell phone telling a friend that she was at that moment within talking distance of Zion. The woman walked up and asked if she could get a picture with Zion on her cell phone. Zion agreed and Rusty took the shot. Then Rusty asked Zion could she get a picture of them together. The woman, using Rusty's phone, took the picture, shook hands with both women and left smiling.
"Well I'm flexible" Rusty said.
"Okay, how about tonight. It'll be good to get out."
They agreed on a place to eat and was to meet at a location that Zion knew the way to without difficulty. And from there Zion would follow in her car. After saying they'd see each other later, Rusty went by the Steak House and made a reservation. She wanted to be sure to get a table away from a lot of traffic. She knew that Zion wouldn't want to be stared at during her meal. Later, they met up as planned and Nancy got to meet Zion and Sky. Rusty decided not to ask a girlfriend to be her date because if the other two regulars found out they would be mad. As expected, someone recognized Zion and the word was spread that she was in the restaurant. But the foursome ate without anyone coming up and asking for pictures or autographs. It was an enjoyable evening.
The next day, Nancy was telling Gayle about having dinner with Zion and Sky. They were having lunch together when Rusty came in. She had been out playing basketball at the playground.
"Rusty, you're too old to be out there still playing ball with the boys" Nancy teased. Rusty was in great shape for a woman in her early forties because she exercised vigoriously four or five times a week. She'd always been athletic since a kid and her mother had tried to get her to stop playing ball with the boys when she was thirteen. Nancy had wanted to see her daughter in dresses and makeup but finally gave up on dolling up Rusty, who preferred to wear sweats most of the year. Even in the summer, Rusty sometimes wore cut off sweat pants and sleeves were cut off the tops. Not that Rusty looked bad in whatever she wore but she seldom went through much effort where clothes were concerned. At dinner the previous evening, Rusty had worn a new pair of black slacks with matching jacket and a white silk blouse with pearl buttons. Her hair, most times in thick braids under a cap or scarf, had been down, combed straight back with the ends curled under. She had worn tiny gold earrings but no makeup. She was stunning and Nancy was proud to be escorted by her daughter.
"It's getting cold out there. It was feeling good earlier but the sky is getting grey. I'm going to take a shower, what's for lunch?" Rusty said kissing her mother's forehead. She touched Gayle on the shoulder as she passed on the way down the hall.
"She exercises and then wants to eat. But it must work because she stays pretty much the same size" Nancy said putting leftovers in the microwave.
"She looks terrific. I try eating more to gain weight and the only exercise I get is from daily regular activities. I've always been kind of on the skinny side.
"You're a nice size girl. Don't you know you're called the trailer court model? I don't see why women are all the time going on about how much they weigh. Some men like small women and some like women that got some meat on their bones. I say as long as a woman is health and feel good about herself, she shouldn't worry so much about her weight. Of course, carrying too much extra can be unhealthy. My daughter seems to like all sizes" Nancy laughed as she made a fresh pot of coffee. She put a couple slices of pie on a saucer and a whipped cream container on the table. Fifteen minutes later, the phone rang just as Rusty was coming down the hall. Rusty set the microwave timer. Nancy told her to hang up the phone after she picked up in her bedroom. Rusty listened for a sec and then hung up the receiver.
"That's Maria, so mom will be a while. Where's Vanessa, with her dad?" Rusty asked and received a nod. She poured coffee for Gayle and herself. The microwave went off and she transferred the food to her plate, said grace silently and began to eat. They made small talk until Rusty finished and was ready for dessert. Before starting she leaned back and stretched her arms wide to get the kinks out of her relaxing muscles. Gayle just stared at her with mouth slightly open. "I think I you're going to like the gift I got for you" Rusty smiled.
"Please don't get me anything. I'm not buying any gifts, just Santa Clause for Vanessa."
"You don't have to give me a gift just because I give you one. Actually, you give me a gift whenever you're here when I come home" Rusty winked and spooned whip cream atop her pie. Gayle dipped an index finger into the cream on the pie and held it out to Rusty who hesitated slightly before accepting the tempting offering. Gayle then slowly slid the digit between her own lips, the whole time staring into Rusty's eyes. Once again Rusty was fighting with herself to stay still. She did like seeing Gayle in her house. She liked having her close even if she had to stay a certain distance from her. To distract herself, she ate her pie and hoped her mom would hurry back and join them.
Christmas day finally arrived. Family came, exchanged gifts, and ate. This day was always fun and hectic. Finally, the house was quiet. Wrapping paper, bows, fruit, candy and open gifts were spread through the living room. The scent of Christmas was in the air. Later that evening, Gayle stopped by with Vanessa to say Merry Christmas. Vanessa had made her gifts in school and Gayle had bought inexpensive frames for each. They would later hang on the bedroom wall of each woman. Gayle gave Nancy a little foot stoot that she had bought at a thrift store. She had sewn a cover for it that blended with the chair that Nancy sat on. She gave Rusty a package of white cotton socks because Nancy had told her that Rusty had wanted someone to give her socks but she never got them as a gift. Rusty had all kinds of socks but she really liked wearing white cotton and went through them fast. Gayle had made a gift card saying she would fix Rusty's hair for New Years. Nancy had bought Vanessa a dress, socks and shoes for Sunday wear. Rusty had bought the girl a sweat suit, socks and tennis shoes. Nancy gave Gayle a microwave and Rusty gave her a bag with several items in it. Rusty whispered for her not to open the boxed one until she got home. Nancy opened the white envelope that had SEASON'S GREETINGS and her name on it. She cried when she opened it and saw a fifty dollar bill and a gift certificate for four brand new auto tires. She just stepped into Rusty's arms and cried full out.
"Come on now, can't have you riding little Vee around on bald tires" Rusty smiled looking at Vanessa who smiled back. Nancy took the girl into her bedroom to hang her gift.
"I give you socks and you give me tires" Gayle sniffed against the shoulder she didn't want to leave.
"Hmm, lady I like the way you say thank you" Rusty said holding the woman tighter. Then all too soon they drew apart. Nancy and Vanessa returned to the room. Nancy asked Gayle to stay a while and watch a movie. Gayle accepted not wanting to leave Rusty yet. So they watched a movie and ate in the livingroom with trays across their laps to hold the plates and drinks. Nancy sat on her chair and Rusty sat on her chair. Gayle was on the sofa and Vanessa was on the floor, but later joined her mother on the sofa. She was asleep by the time the movie ended. Gayle lifted Vanessa who was almost too big for her to carry now. She said good night to Nancy and kissed her on the cheek. Rusty walked them home taking the gifts. Rusty stopped outside the front door.
"Come on in Rusty. You're welcomed in my house", Gayle told her. Rusty was still standing outside the door when Gayle returned from putting Vanessa to bed.
"I'd better not. No point in taking chances" Rusty said handing the packages to Gayle.
"I promise not to jump you. Come on in."
"Somebody might see and it'll get back to your mother. That's the chance I mean."
"I'm not worrying about my mother and neither should you."
"As much as I would like to, I can't. I mean -- I'd better go. Good night Gayle."
"Good night Rusty. Thank you for being a good friend."
"Is something going on between you and Gayle?" Nancy asked when her daughter returned. Rusty mumbled something and went into the kitchen to wash the dishes and put away the left overs. "I think she likes you."
"What's not to like, I'm adorable" Rusty half smiled not looking at her mother.
"She's not married."
"Meaning what?"
"Meaning she's single. Why don't you ask her out? I can tell that you like her."
"So I like her. I like a lot of women. I don't date them all."
"What's wrong. She didn't ask you in. I thought..."
"Mom I carried her bags to the door. That's all."
"I think she's like you. She always asking about you when you're not here. And the way she held on to you tonight. Well I've got the feeling that she really likes you and not just..."
"Drop it mom. She's a friend and a neighbor and she has a mother."
"The other women you date also have mothers and that doesn't stop you. Gayle is a nice girl. Don't you ever think about settling down and stop all this running around with different women. I've heard about that woman Darlene you run around with. She...."
"NO no no. Uh uh. I don't want to hear it. You don't know anything about Darlene so don't tell me what you heard someone else say about her. The same way you are about to repeat gossip about her is the same way people repeat gossip about me. People know my name and that I'm a lesbian but that doesn't mean they know me."
"Okay Rusty, calm down. I didn't mean to upset you. You're right and I'm sorry. I shouldn't repeat what other people say. But you never bring anyone here, so I don't even know if you're really serious about someone or will ever be serious with just one person. Salena..."
"What about Salena?"
"I thought maybe you and Salena -- well I thought there was more between you than...."
'Than? Than what? Have you talked to her?"
"No. Just that when she came back and you to got together again, you seemed different, well happier. And after she left you went back to the same routine. Maria said Salena was dating someone and so, well if you're thinking about her..."
"I'm not thinking about her. I'm not thinking about anybody. I think about the woman I'm with at the time. Beyond that -- well, I don't. I'm tired. I'm going to bed. See you in the morning" Rusty said kissing her mother's cheek and holding her tight.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Rusty gave a party to welcome in the new year with her friends. Several women in her family who enjoyed cooking prepared the food. The restaurant was decorated with festive colors and glitter balls hung from the ceiling. Robin, Gary, Roger, Randy and others from their group attended. Zion and Sky also was there and glad that they were welcomed without a big production. Nancy invited Maria who brought a date, and a few other older family members. Rusty was dancing with her mother when the count down started. Everyone shouted happy new year and Rusty kissed her mother on the lips and told her that she loved her. A few minutes later, Nancy and the older guest left. Rusty had given Darlene and the other two women invitations but Darlene was the only one that came. Rusty had told each to bring a date because she would be mingling and not have time to give them her full attention. And she made it clear that there was to be no jealousy displayed. Neither of them was dating exclusively, and she wanted to include them in her first party. One couldn't make the party and the other had recently gotten a boyfriend and he didn't want to be around the ex-girlfriend. Darlene started not to go but did want to be near Rusty when the new year started but she didn't arrive alone. She had recently met a woman and invited her to the party. Rusty worked the room weaving her way around trying to say hello to everyone. She had invited Gayle and was glad to see her walk in even if she wasn't alone. Rusty had a cousin and one of his friends working the door. Only people with invitations were allowed in. Luckily only a few people showed up that wasn't invited and left quietly when they couldn't enter. Gayle danced with her date. Rusty danced with a couple of people but stayed away from Gayle wondering who the guy was holding her so snuggly. It was the beginning of a new year and everyone had a good time.
New Beginning
"I haven't had time alone with you to say thank you for the secret gift" Gayle smiled when Nancy went to the bathroom. "I used it after midnight and I thought of you."
"Well you probably don't need it now."
"Why do you say that?"
"The guy you brought to the party. The guy who has been to your house every day since then. The guy..."
"He's just a guy my mother thinks I should date."
"So you're dating him to please your mother."
"I'm not dating him. I took him to the party just so my mother would stop bugging me about going to the party by myself. She thought there would be a lot of gay people there because you were giving it. And so I agreed to take Mark. And he's been coming by to see me even though I've repeatedly told him that I wasn't going out with him again."
"So you asked some guy out and now he's interested in you but you were just using him."
"I wasn't using him. He asked me out and so I invited him to the party. He got to go to a party with free food and drinks. Rusty I wanted to be with you that night. In the same space with you and that was a way for me to be there without having my mother nagging me."
"It's none of my business anyway" Rusty said rubbing the middle of her forehead.
"Only in hell is it not. I want you. I'll come to you tonight or you can come to my place. Vanessa is staying with my mother this weekend" Gayle said softly taking a step forward.
"No. I told you I'm not sneaking around with you. That's not how I live my life."
"You know why I can't be open about how I feel about you."
