'Star Trek III' really didn't have much chance of achieving the high-water mark of its predecessor, 'Star Trek II', but it does manage to be a very strong continuation even if the dramatics are a bit more down to Earth. In almost all cases, this works in the film's favour as this installment of the Star Trek film franchise, perhaps more than any other, focuses the most on the interpersonal relationships between the characters, what they are prepared to do for each other, and what trials they will put themselves through to achieve those goals. As a result, 'Star Trek III', despite having a decent amount of action as we've come to expect from Star Trek, is filled with fabulous individual character moments and scenes which will touch and move you. Everything that happens in this film is not galactic in stature as in 'Star Trek II', rather it's more personal, even down to the film's villain Kruge who although doesn't match the stature of Khan still manages to pack a mighty punch as a character, as expertly played by Christopher Lloyd. All of this comes as no surprise as Leonard Nimoy serves as director this time around, bringing an actor's sensibilities to the director's chair. Overall, this is a strong entry in the Star Trek franchise and a worthy science fiction film in its own right.
There isn't really much to explain about the story other than to say that it's all in the title. Spock died at the end of 'Star Trek II' and the crew of the Enterprise spend the bulk of this film bringing him back. Along the way, they have to deal with the Klingons who want to steal the Genesis device and use it for their own evil purposes. This comes to light when Kirk and company steal the Enterprise to go to the Genesis planet in order to retrieve Spock's body but the Klingons are waiting for them, culminating in the destruction of the Enterprise and a strong finale where Kirk battles the evil Klingon commander Kruge, eventually triumphant over the Klingon, steals the Klingon ship and heads back to Vulcan just in time to restore Spock's mind to his body. It sounds a little hokey but surprisingly this concept that one human being (in this case McCoy) is containing Spock's spirit and can essentially be downloaded back in to Spock's body is never silly or contrived. What makes it all work is the seriousness with which it's portrayed. McCoy's 'isnanity' is properly developed a story point, and it actually isn't realised what is happening until well in to the film. Some strong acting from DeForest Kelley and William Shatner really sell the idea that there's something more going on and makes for some compelling character scenes.
The action in the film, while not as huge as in 'Star Trek II', is still effective and entertaining. The film contains two big centrepiece sequences; the first is when Kirk and his crew successfully steal the Enterprise out of its space dock. This is a very good scene, and works well from a dramatic standpoint as Kirk is now putting his career on the line by stealing the Enterprise to search for his friend. The second sequence is the space battle between the Enterprise and the Klingon Bird of Prey. They both outmaneuver each other, leading to a verbal confrontation between Kruge and Kirk which leads to the tragic death of Kirk's son David. This is where the character moments I mentioned before bring a more personal touch to this film; Kirk's reaction to his son's death will leave you silent and moved as you realise just how much Kirk is sacrificing to get Spock back. Kirk's final sacrifice of blowing up the Enterprise to save the lives of his crew and destroy the Klingons is another strong moment, and seeing the iconic starship exploding in to pieces makes for one of the strongest sequences in the film series.
The ethics of the 'Genesis' project are extended and broadened in this film. Whereas 'Star Trek II' pondered the question of the ethics of what it could be used for, 'Star Trek III' focuses more on why humans should never attempt to play God by creating such technology. In creating Genesis, David makes mistakes which lead to the destabilization and eventual self-destruction of the Genesis planet. In one strong scene, David is confronted with his transgressions when he realises that many people have died so he could fulfill his own dream of seeing this project come to a reality; behaviour which is extremely selfish, which leads David in the end to pay the ultimate price.
Where the film finally comes undone a bit are the scenes between when Kirk defeats Kruge and commandeers his ship back to Vulcan and the scene where Spock appears at the very end, alive and well. Much of the heat goes out of the story and the pacing gets bogged down considerably because for about 10-15 minutes there is no danger and we know exactly what is going to happen so these scenes are almost killing time until Kirk and company can get Spock back up and running again.
Despite some slow parts towards the end of the film, 'Star Trek III' is a great sci-fi adventure yarn with great character moments and further continues the Star Trek legacy in style.

Twilight
I love Vampire movies so I was expecting this to be like "Interview..." or "Underworld". It's not as sophisticated as either of those, but I thought the acting here was really good and the story was very sweet. Imagine, for those of you who were teenagers in the 90's, that R.L. Stine and Judy Blume got together and wrote a book... TWILIGHT is what I would imagine they'd concoct.

The whole movie was shot like a music video; lots of extreme close ups and music montages. Although, I was surprised at how sophisticated the music WAS in this film. A few things were distracting like the bad vampire makeup and the occasional bout of forced dialogue. It was all a little too contrived for me. Lots of "Insert tense feeling here" moments, but overall, I suppose I liked it. Images and moments from the film kept creeping up on me for days after I saw it. This movie is definitely for the tween/teen crowd, but I appreciate that it is still wholesome and innocent, like young love.

I heard of a review for this film that said something to the effect of "If you liked the books, you'll love the movie. But it's probably not going to recruit any NEW fans just on the film alone."

I concur.

like so many stars sound where they think saying that will give them instant credibility. And he discussed his other works as well. Rope he said was a chore. "You do eight minutes and something falls on the set and you gotta do the whole goddamn scene over." And "Jimmy (Stewart) wasn't right for the part and Hitch knew it and Jimmy knew it and Jimmy felt he had to struggle with it. The part is a snooty, elitist professor and Jimmy just doesn't project snooty elitism. Someone like James Mason would've been better suited for the part."
On Nicholas Ray: "He had such a feel for gritty personal films and then he started doing a bunch of glitzy crap. I said, 'Nick what's with all the glitzy crap' and by that point he didn't care what he was making anymore."
On Shelley Winters: "We were at this hotel that had pictures of the stars and she says to the manager, 'You should have my picture up there' and the manager didn't even know who she was and wouldn't put her picture up (Granger laughs). I just told her to shut up about it. She was a great lady to work with but you know, these stars sometimes, they get a little big headed." Amazingly he pulled that last statement off without a hint of irony. He really didn't have that "Star" mentality about him so he could talk about "stars" as if he wasn't one.
And then there was Samuel Goldwyn who he didn't like at all. Goldwyn had demanded Granger pay him all the money on the contract that he had received because Granger wanted to quit working with Goldwyn after Hans Christian Anderson. Granger paid back the money and left. The thing is, aside from relaying those facts, he didn't elaborate any further on what problems he and Goldwyn had and when asked about the book he had written he said he had contacted everyone or their relatives before writing it and told them what he wanted to write. If they objected to anything he left it out. He even called Goldwyn's children and asked if it was okay to recount the stories of the troubles he had with Goldwyn. They said it was okay. Geez louise, what a guy. I don't have the book myself, but I'm told it has the same "blunt honesty without being mean spirited" attitude that came off in the interview. And it mainly concerns his life in the theatre which he enjoyed much more than film.
Of course, for me, the highlight of the interview was when he spoke about Robert Walker during the course of making Strangers on a Train.

like so many stars sound where they think saying that will give them instant credibility. And he discussed his other works as well. Rope he said was a chore. Of course, for me, the highlight of the interview was when he spoke about Robert Walker during the course of making Strangers on a Train. I've written about Walker here before and prior to that Sheila O'Malley had an excellent write-up on Strangers on a Train so I won't rehash the story of Walker's life or his excellent performance in the film. Rather I'll let Farley Granger have the final word from this video I shot of the interview (I was in the back lower balcony area, the best place to sit at the theatre. The seats back there are bigger, more like recliners, and have tables between them for your refreshments and at least four feet of room before the next seat in front of you or behind you but you have to get there early for those seats - which I always do). In the clip Granger describes the first night he, Hitchcock and Walker got together in Washington, D.C. before the first day of shooting. They went out to dinner downtown before retiring to their rooms at the hotel, at which point Walker started to panic. The rest I'll leave to Granger but from this story I was reminded of how fragile was Robert Walker, and how gracious and sympathetic was Granger. Walker must have sensed that to let himself go in front of him like he did, and Granger didn't let him down. They had just met but Granger treated him like a brother. It's a great story and it was a great experience seeing and meeting Farley Granger. Enjoy the clip.

Although the great acting (at least from Brolin, Cromwell and Banks) continues in the next 2/3s of the picture, the tone, camera-work, direction andimprovisational qualities don't, and a throughly boring, and tap-your-fingers-in-impatience mood sets in. First off, when I first realized that there'd been a huge shift in tone, and notfor the better, was probably in the prolonged, 15-20 minute conference sequence, where Dubya, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and Condy Rice are pretty much discussing the most dry and yawn-worthysince Journey to the Center of the Earth 3Dtried to get a message across. Theis bloated and bland, and was where the movie pretty much stopped me in my tracks and said, 'this part of the film is going to suck, you can leave now'. Throughout the rest of the picture, there are some completely gagtastic performances. Let's start not good and then work our way down to abominable. First, we have Toby Jones as Karl Rove, not a terrible performance, but not a good one either; in other words, he really doesn't need to be here and Stone could've found a better man for the job. Next, there's Ioan Gruffudd as Tony Blair, who only appears in one scene, but bombs that so bad, it's laughable. The man flits in and out of his british accent, and hisreactions to Thandie Newton (we'll get to her in a minute) and Josh Brolin, are church-basement-Christmas-pageant bad, I mean, he reeeally didn't need to be there. And, finally we have (sigh, gulp) Thandie Newton as Condoleezza Rice. Man, what a travesty. She's all of her emotions to the highest degree and plays Rice with so much gloss and SNL-feeling baggage it's hard not to laugh. She nods along with everyone else, and her accent (maybe it was trying to be humorous, I don't know) is god-awful. It also feels like she was just thrown into the the movie at the last minute for a more juicy salary; Newton shows up a few times peppered in places throughout, but you don'thear her until maybe 15 minutes remaining and it's then I knew Stone was scraping a completely empty barrel, looking for more interesting things toin his movie instead of the same conference room small-talk.

The mysterious body that chooses the pool of potential documentary feature nominees for the Oscars every year probably stepped in another flaming bag of poo yesterday with the release of this years short list.
The effusive praise heaped upon Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father by critics, bloggers and audiences alike has gone unrewarded.  I dont know if Up the Yangtze met the obscure eligibility requirements (Young@Heart did not), but I can think of a few fans of that film who will be disappointed as well.
Heres the list:
At the Death House Door
The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)
Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh
*Encounters at the End of the World
Fuel
The Garden
Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts
*I.O.U.S.A.
In a Dream
Made in America
*Man on Wire
*Pray the Devil Back to Hell
Standard Operating Procedure
They Killed Sister Dorothy
*Trouble the Water
Ive only seen the five films marked with stars, but if Zachary is as good as its reputation, I could easily see I.O.U.S.A and Pray the Devil Back to Hell getting bumped in its favor.
I also wouldve included Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson, but Im pretty sure Im about the only one.

I for one am most excited to finally see Lucky Dragons. Luke Fischbeck, Sarah Rara, and any sometimes collaborators would say they are "artists who use music." They're also the team behind Sumi Ink Club. Lucky Dragons shows are about the birthing of new and temporary creatures--creating equal-power situations in which audience members cooperate amongst themselves, to build a fragile network of digital signals connected by touching on the skin. There have been hundreds of these simple yet shifting and unpredictable instances--with audiences ranging from the intense intimacy of one person to the public spectacle of over one thousand people. At the heart of it all is playing together--building up social collectivities, re-engaging the wonder and impossibility of technology and live performance. It sounds--and looks--like simple and ancient patterns coming together and falling apart in a sincere attempt to let wires and screens and words become clear and crystal.

Quantum of Solace. Picking up where Casino Royale left off, the latest entry in the revitalized James Bond franchise finds the super spy bent on revenge for the murder of his love. Mathieu Amalric (here in the first of two movies released this week) plays the bad guy who is most likely behind some plot for world domination because thats how these things work. The Bond series effectively ran out of gas and came to a lurching halt in 1987 with The Living Daylights, not coincidentally the same year my childhood came to an end and I graduated from high school. The 1989 follow-up, Licence to Kill, was a desultory mess and it officially ended my interest in James Bond though I caught the Brosnan Bonds on DVD out of habit. These were slick and spirited but ultimately they all kind of bled together in title and plot and I cant tell one from another. When Casino Royale was first announced I didnt much care, but then I caught the first teaser trailer, the one that was partly in black and white. My interest was piqued. The movie itself wasnt perfect, but it was the first Bond that left me excited about seeing the next one since I was a kid and here it is. I hope Quantum of Solace uses Casino Royale as a springboard into further goodness and isnt just a return to old bad habits.

With AFI winding down this weekend, I only caught one new release: Captain Abu Raed, Jordans official submission for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. Im not sure if it was just playing in LA to qualify for the awards or if it will play elsewhere before 2009.
Winner of the World Cinema Audience award at Sundance and a Best Director award for Amin Matalqa at the Seattle International Film Festival, Captain Abu Raed is the kind of audience pleaser that my mom wouldve loved. Thats a good thing and a not-so-good thing depending on your taste. She was a sucker for simple films about big-hearted people that play to the emotions even if they were a little too schmaltzy for their own good.
Nadim Sawalha plays an airport janitor with a tragic past. When he returns home to his working class neighborhood one evening wearing a captains hat he has found, the children mistake him for a real pilot. He plays along and regales them with stories of places hes only read about in books.
One of the kids is abused by his father and another is put to work selling candy on the street instead of sent to school. Meanwhile, Abu Raed befriends a pretty pilot whose father worries that shes still unmarried. Being the gentle sort, Abu Raed insinuates himself into each situation in an attempt to make it better.
The sweeping music at times overplayed the inherent drama and it all seemed just a little too easy, but I have to admit in the end it got to me. Its a humanistic, well-intentioned film and its easy to be taken by it. If youre a cynic, the sentimentality will surely get to you, but your mom might like it.
