The drive up and down Californias San Joaquin Valley can be tedious, but consider a stop along the way in Visalia. Seven Sycamores Ranch is offering a kind of bed-and-breakfast experience on a real farm.
Agri-tourism is what they call it - the blending of tourism with Californias vast farmlands and orchards to offer city folk an up-close view of how an orange, for example, gets from the tree to your dining room table. With its location just outside of Visalia, Seven Sycamores is in a good location to break up that long drive between the cities of Northern and Southern California.
Bob McKellar is the host of Seven Sycamores and something of a visionary in the realm of agri-tourism. A few years back when he was just 75 years old, McKellar decided it was time to find ways to market some of his orange crop outside the usual packing shed channels that tend to eat up a growers profits. He joined a national organization and found that, in some places, farmers had started - community supported agriculture programs - that cut out some middlemen and brought fruit straight to the consumer. Today, McKellar sells a sizable portion of his crop by packaging hundreds of fruit baskets delivered regularly to local customers.
Then McKellar got to thinking about the growers in other parts of the country who were hosting weddings on their property and, in his first year, booked 30 weddings on his picturesque grounds.
The piece de resistance is that McKellar now offers visitors overnight stays in an authentic farmhouse - a kind of bed and breakfast experience except that McKellar lives down the road and not in the house, and the breakfast comes in the form of fresh groceries that guests cook up themselves. If the three-bedroom farmhouse is too big, guests can opt for an economy-sized bunkhouse nearby. Both come complete with hens and baby chicks wandering the grounds, as well as roosters who offer guests wake-up calls for no extra charge.
McKellars mother lived in the house for many decades until 2002 when she passed away. There are family photos still in the house, which makes it feel like a home, not a vacation rental. One guest used the guestbook to complain about all the family photos, but McKellar has no intention of taking the photos down. We thought they simply added to the charm of our stay.
The accommodations are comfortable, even for a large family. A big living room and old-fashioned porch area provide comfortable spots to unwind, while the kitchen has everything you need to cook up your own farm-style meals. As part of your stay, the Seven Sycamores will ask you what you like for breakfast and then have your refrigerator stocked upon your arrival.
McKellar family history is everywhere you look on the grounds. One example would be the observation tower - a replica of the real thing that was used to watch for Japanese bombers if they attempted to attack L.A. by flying in over the San Joaquin Valley. McKellars family and neighbors took turns watching in two-hour shifts for two full years.
If thats not enough for you, consider that McKellar also puts on his tour guide hat and personally escorts his guests through his 200 acres of orange trees where visitors will learn the differences between navel and Valencia oranges, the best ways to plant them, water them, harvest them and darn near enough info that guests could start growing oranges on their own.
Still not content, McKellar has begun hosting what he calls a Spring Farm Fest, which opens his acreage up to local families to come out and play carnival games, including a one-of-a-kind orange tree maze where families can find their way along roped pathways through a giant puzzle and collect proof along the way they completed the entire maze. If youve ever watched Survivor, its a game that is just as intricate as one of that TV shows reward challenges.
As it turns out, the Visalia area has quite a few farm-related attractions for visitors. Its a bustling city with more than 400,000 residents within the marketing area. A lot of the homes are rural and, of course, farmland and orchards stretch for as far as the eye can see.
We stopped by Wiebe Farms in Reedley, where manager Richard Sawatzky carries on the family tradition that started with his father-in-law, Louise Wiebe, who launched the operation back in 1956. The first crop of nectarines was produced in 1959 and today this family-run business grows 500 acres of nectarines, peaches and plums, about 50 different varieties of fruit altogether. Tour buses bring tourists by a special barn where theyre shown a professionally produced video outlining the Wiebe Farms history and then taken on an open flatbed trailer to see the trees and learn more about fruit production.
A big part of the Wiebe Farms tour nowadays is an olive oil tasting. Wiebe recently purchased the rights to produce Bari Olive Oil and they are setting aside acreage now to grow olives. But before you just drop by Wiebe Farms, be sure and call them (559-638-6861) as tours are not available every day.
Another stop in the general area was Lukes Almond Acres where Ed Esajian manages a Country Store that sells almonds he produces as well as a wide variety of fruit and nut products. Esajian also has been known to take a few minutes and talk to visitors about how the almonds are produced. Our advice: Stock up on the chocolate-covered almonds.
A great place to stop is Bravo Farms Cheese Factory you cant miss it along the 99 freeway in Travers. The place is packed with visitors who find a treasure trove of gifts and food products and can watch cheese being made. We spent a couple of minutes with owner Jonathan Van Ryn, who took us down below the cheese factory to the refrigerated cellar where there is a room full of shelves stacked with blocks of cheese that are still aging. Bravo Farms now is breaking into the Costco chain where you can buy their award-wining Silver Mountain cloth-bound cheddar cheese.
You cant miss Bravo Farms as your traveling along the freeway - it started out in the 50s as a roadside fruit stand and now Van Ryn has come in and expanded the operation to include a gift shop, burger joint, ice cream shop and convenience store. Bravo cheese actually has been produced since the 70s by a local dairy farm, but the current cheese factory was built as a partnership between Van Ryn and the original Bravo owner.
It all goes to show theres more than meets the eye as you make the tedious drive up and down the San Joaquin Valley. Next time take a slight detour into Visalia where Californias agriculture produces more than just fruit and vegetables.

Dozens of Chicago police officers jammed a pension fund board meeting this morning to question a deal with a real estate investment firm involving Mayor Richard Daley's nephew, Clout Street reports.

The Tribune recently reported that the city's inspector general, David Hoffman, is investigating the public employee pension fund investments in DV Urban Realty, which includes mayoral nephew Robert Vanecko and Daley ally Allison Davis.

But pension board officials say they are not obligated to respond to a subpoena from the inspector general, who is empowered to probe potential wrongdoing in city government.

I have always felt more attuned to unrequited love than actual love. A big part of this is a result of my early childhood experiences and the other part of this stemmed from my fractured body image. I always demanded love from someone who was incapable of giving it, like extracting water from stone. My early conditioning from my parents was that love was both rejection and control. No one would love me except for them. I was unlovable. To love was to ache, to suffer, to lose, to be alone. Better not to try because no one would want me. By the time I reached my twenties, I had fulfilled my own prophecy. What better way to recreate parental rejection, than through romantic rejection. I had turned myself into the stone.

It is a strange collision of circumstance, self-damning behavior and misguided romantic idealism that has led to me to the verge of spinsterhood. I watched as my friends got married, one by one. They married nice guys, decent guys, normal guys. I never attracted nice guys, decent guys, normal guys. I attracted the dregs. The men who wanted a quick lay. The men who would leer at my breasts while making me pay for my own dinner. The men who would follow me around the grocery store and out to my car. Normal nice guys were beyond my reach. They almost uniformly thought they could do better. I wasn't unattractive. It was like they could sense that I had nothing to offer them. They wanted a woman that they considered their equal, and they could see that I was not that.

I had created my own dating vortex: the men who wanted me were never the ones I wanted. The ones who considered themselves above me were the ones I was attracted to. The ones who were totally unattainable were the ones I went completely mad for. I could always see it in their faces, the moment when repulsion flashed across their eyes before they tried to hide it. I would immediately feel that look snaking through me, making my hands throb and my chest ache. I dreaded it. I hated it. I hated myself for opening myself and being vulnerable to that kind of rejection.At the same time, I had this incredibly distorted sense of romantic idealism. I wanted to be rescued. I wanted him to give me identity and self worth.

The truth is, I was not capable of loving another person because I did not think I deserved to be loved back. I was such a self-destructive wreck that I could not form recognizable human emotions other than anger, fear, and sadness. It was not until I sought help for my eating disorder, my depression and my anxiety that I began to feel human again. My therapist said that when I began seeing her, I reminded her of a brittle china doll. Externally, I tried so hard to appear normal, but my facade was so fragile. I was a fractured person.

Now that I am in my thirties, I feel different now. I am still holding my breath, hoping that the one for me is just around the corner, but I need less from him now. I don't need him to tell me I have self-worth. I don't need him to give me an identity. I don't need him to protect me or rescue me. Even with my recent setback, I feel stronger and more optimistic than I felt before.

I think this realization alone will help me be more open to real love. I am still a deeply, romantic soul who believes in destiny and BIG LOVE, but for the first time in my life, I think I deserve it.

Last Saturday, I had the great privilege of visiting Midtown Center for Boys in Bucktown. Serving primarily African-American and Latino boys from all over Chicago, Midtown Center for Boys offers one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for 4th-6th graders. After 6th grade, the tutoring program is centered around enrichment classes to prepare the students for test-taking and college admissions. The one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program is where the boys get their start at academic enrichment, and that's what I visited.

Every tutoring session begins with 45 minutes of sports - a great idea in my opinion because I know how energetic kids can be after getting out of school or waking up in the morning on Saturdays. This helps them better focus for the next hour and 15 minutes on their schoolwork. Students then meet with their tutors one-on-one for about an hour. At the end, their is a show-and-tell time for students and finally, a virtue talk. The virtue talk is led by an adult tutor/mentor who leads a discussion about a certain virtue. This week the virtue was enthusiasm, and I must say the boys showed great enthusiasm at participating in the discussion about why putting passion and energy into everything they do. Previous discussion surrounded around the virtues of compassion and dependability. I thought this was a great way to break out of the academic mode and help mentor the students into become better people. One of the tutors even had his student write an essay about the virtue that was discussed the previous week.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the level of dedication of the volunteer tutor/mentors. Since Midtown Center for Boys is only for boys (there's also the Metro Achievement Center for Girls), all the tutors are male as well. Many of them are young professional, just out of college, and they showed great enthusiasm and passion for what they are doing. I saw some of them carrying books about geometry and preparing for state testing into the program - evidence that they were going above and beyond the call of duty of just tutoring for that hour. I was also impressed that many tutor/mentors had been tutoring for 7, 8, 9 years - which shows a great dedication to staying involved in students' lives.

I want to especially thank Angel Diaz, the program director of the 4th-6th grade one-on-one tutoring program for letting me come this past Saturday. I had a wonderful time at Midtown Center for Boys and was thoroughly impressed with everyone their.

Illinois has spent millions to fight HIV and AIDS, but African Americans still struggle to receive needed treatment.

African Americans constitute about 15 percent of Illinois population, but more than 50 percent of people living with the virus, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health, which provided The Chicago Reporter with data from 2003 to 2007, the latest five years for which statistics are available.

Among black people, men who have sex with men represent the largest percentage of new diagnosesand a growing share of diagnoses for which risk factors are known from 2003 to 2007.

Meanwhile, the amount of prevention dollars in 2007 for African Americans represented only 30 percent of all prevention monies spent by the statea significant drop from the 46 percent of all state prevention dollars used for black people in 2002.

But unless it's been negotiated beforehand (as with Clinton, most likely), the transition team gets to make most of the big decisions for big jobs like assistant secretary, deputy secretary, etc. Folks like Schnur, LDH, and the like will get those jobs, if all goes to form.

So what does that mean for Chicago types who want to go to DC? Duncan seems likely to want to take a few trusted folks -- Ann Whalen, David Pickens, Peter Cunningham, Greg Darnieder? Others like the Consortium's John Easton and high school curriculum guy Mike Lach could stay or go, depending on a bunch of things. For continuity and other purposes, BEW might want Lach to stay as some sort of deputy.
