Hopefully, this dude leaves her alone. If he doesn't, she can just keep dressing like her closet has a Narnia-like entrance into an Amish thrift store. That will show him.

In the Gazette magazines we regularly publish monthly reports from Women's Institute meetings. Sometimes I post them onto the Spaghetti Gazetti website just to give folk a flavour of what goes on at a typical W.I. meetings. They are very active groups with lots of interesting things going on, speakers, events, fund raising, arts and crafts, presentations, etc. They are also great social groups for women in their local areas. This one is from Castle Bromwich W.I.

Our Speaker on the 8th October was Mr. Malcolm Faulkner, self-confessed professional beggar for the NHS and member of a fund-raising team based at the Birmingham Children's Hospital. The huge sums awarded from taxes to our NHS enable our hospitals to do wonders,but technological revolution and advances in research ensure that machinery, drugs and treatment require constant updating, hence the ever-increasing need for extra expenditure to bridge the funding gap.

Part of Malcolm's work is to advise would-be fund raisers in order that large sums can be raised legally and safely. Apparently many fund-raisers, although driven by the best of intentions, fail to realise that bungee-jumping, charity walks, cycle rides and the like not only need careful planning, but must also be adequately costed beforehand, otherwise these sponsored events can run at a substantial loss to the organisers. Malcolm provides a virtual A-Z of fund-raising dos and don'ts, including positive press/media coverage, necessary police checks, licensing etc.

In addition to his fund-raising activities, he acts as "Mr.Christmas", which entails being responsible for the organisation of the forty-foot decorated fir tree placed every Christmas outside the entrance to the Children's Hospital. Its erection involves a 3.0a.m. start, (to avoid disrupting city traffic), and the help of the Fire Service to ensure site safety. This year's Children's Hospital Appeal will be entitled "Light Up Christmas". Please watch for details in the Local Press.

At the conclusion of Malcolm's fascinating talk, we were delighted to be invited to a "See For Yourselves" tour of the Hospital in the early part of 2009. We very much look forward to our visit. Thank you, Malcolm.

Wednesday, 15th October saw a hardy group of W.I. members and friends brave torrential rain, at the outset, on a visit to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Centre at Slimbridge. Luckily the poor weather conditions abated sufficiently on our arrival for us to enjoy the occasion. The Centre, accessed by a narrow flimsy-looking canal bridge which somewhat daunted our driver and those of us sitting near the front of the coach, is set in peaceful grounds, divided into 'continents' to display the distinctive and separate homes of the various bird-inhabitants. Many of the birds, if not most, are fairly tame and visitors are encouraged to buy bird food. Start feeding them, and they quickly become your friends for the entire visit. Hawaiian pink-footed geese were probably the most persistent 'camp-followers' and became almost attached to one's legs!

Hides for closer viewing of the rarer and less visitor-friendly birds were a 'must-visit', but none of our party was brave enough to attempt the Canoe Safari, on offer. Fresh air, fine views, value-for-money restaurants and souvenir shop all added to the pleasure of our visit.

On 22nd October, we held our Open Meeting. The first part of this annual event involves the election of Committee Members for the following year, as vacancies arise from the standing-down of existing 'office-holders'. Joyce Mitchell, Rita Smith, and Margaret Travis, who have all given years of hard work and enthusiasm signified their intention to stand down on this occasion. All members would wish to give them a sincere vote of thanks for their work; their knowledge and expertise will be sorely missed. However, despite their move to the 'Backbenches', I have no doubt that their help and advice will still be sought and readily given. Adele Hollands was welcomed onto the new 2009 Committee.

Formal business being concluded, the afternoon carried on with the more social activities of chatting, tea and cakes, and competitions, including one of Janice's clever quizzes. Competition of the Day (A Winter Soup Recipe) was won by Mrs. Linda Cassidy, with her Cholesterol-lowering tomato soup.

Plans for the 2009 Programme are now in place; details of events for January and February will be published shortly. New Members are actively sought, and Visitors are always welcome.

On the 5th of November a group of us visited Dobbies' Garden Centre in Atherstone. The gloom of the day was removed by the splendid Christmas decorations and the huge array of gifts and seasonal produce. A great time was had by all and we travelled home laden with purchases.

At the Castle Bromwich Remembrance Day Service held at the Green on Sunday 9th November, a number of members joined fellow residents to commemorate The Fallen of both World Wars. A wreath was laid on behalf of our institute.

On Wednesday 12th November Mr. George Hook (fresh from Midlands To-day fame) talked to us about the history of mother-of-pearl. He still runs the family firm, which has produced buttons, cutlery handles, belt buckles and hair slides for many decades. He brought with him a huge collection of raw material, ranging from giant Australian oyster shells to the exotic African sea-snail shell; once polished these take on the shiny and smooth texture of mother-of-pearl. George managed to keep us laughing throughout - not something we had expected from a talk on sea shells. More retail therapy ensued when he brought out a display of jewellery featuring mother-of-pearl items.

Just a bit of interesting trivia sent to me this morning by Robbie from Ask.com. How many people out there can answer the common questions posed about the West Midlands? I know Spaghetti's good mate Mr Chinn would answer them straight off, but can you and do you have better questions than these? An idea for a new slot perhaps, answer a question and you get to pose the next one... I'll come back on that.

UMMIES IN QUEST FOR THE BODY BEAUTIFUL

Forget money, careers and family concerns image-conscious Brummies are most worried about how to get the perfect body, according to a new survey by Ask.com.

The survey revealed that the age-old female cry of How do I lose weight? is the most common nagging question on the lips of Birmingham locals, with two fifths (40 per cent) of us saying that we want to slim down. In fact, Brummies are the most likely of all Midlanders to want to diet - weight loss is a bigger concern than reducing household bills (37 per cent) and paying off our debts (28 per cent).

The ten nagging questions that Birmingham most wants to know the answer to:
1. How can I lose weight? (40 per cent)
2. How do I reduce the cost of my household bills? (37 per cent)
3. How can I become a millionaire? (29 per cent)
4. How can I reduce my debt? (28 per cent)
5. Should I give up and move to the country? (18 per cent)
6. Why are we having wet summers? (17 per cent)
7. Where is the best place to live in the UK? (13 per cent)
8. How much is my house worth? (13 per cent)
9. Should I install solar panels? (10 per cent)
10. 10. How do I write a CV? (11 per cent)

Regional matters are also on our minds - the survey reveals that almost half (42 per cent) of Birmingham locals spend time pondering over local jargon:

The top five regional nagging questions:
1. Where did the name Birmingham come from? (18 per cent)
2. Why are people from Birmingham called Brummies? (12 per cent)
3. Where does the phrase Send someone to Coventry come from? (12 per cent)
4. Where can I get the hottest curry in Birmingham? (5 per cent)

It also seems that Birmingham is a region of worriers with well over half (58 per cent) dwelling on a nagging question at least once a week. And its set to get worse, as half of us (50 per cent) worry more today than we did ten years ago.

Night time is worry time for Brummies nine out of ten (87 per cent) have had their sleep destroyed by a concern. And we must all be feeling exhausted as the average time to wake with a question on our mind is 3am.

Behavioral psychologist Martin Goodyear comments; "In todays complex world, improvements in communication and 24 hour news, mean that we are bombarded with more and more information to keep us awake at night.

So where are Birmingham residents turning to find the answers to these nagging questions? It seems that 95 per cent of us have now abandoned old fashioned books and encyclopedias and over half of us (56 per cent) are most likely to turn to sophisticated online search engines.

"With sites like the new Ask.com using improved technology to deliver the best answers first time, every time, it's no wonder over a quarter (27 per cent) cite the Internet as their most important source for getting answers to their nagging questions.

If the Internet tops the poll as the best problem solver, then who is the greatest questioner of all time according to Birmingham residents? Almost one six of us (14 per cent) claim that Einstein asked the best questions, closely followed by Aristotle (11 per cent) and modern day question king Jeremy Paxman (nine per cent). And we all know that mums can nag at times so it's not surprising that eight per cent think that their mother deserves the title.

New exhibition explores the definition of urban art

Blu, David Choe, Miranda Donovan, Faile, Conor Harrington, Todd James a.k.a REAS, Paul Insect, Invader, Lucy McLauchlan, Antony Micallef, Polly Morgan, JR, Vhils, Jonathan Yeo, Zevs
The international exhibition Outsiders, brings together the work of fifteen artists who have emerged from the edges of the mainstream art world to produce some of the most exhilarating and original works on the contemporary scene today. Fresh from the New York show of the same title, the artists are preparing to descend on Walsall this winter to transform the interior of the gallery.

Some of the artists in the exhibition make their mark quite literally outside, on the walls of the towns and cities across the globe; others work solely indoors, in a more traditional way. A handful have received no formal art school training. Collectively, the artists share a desire to exhibit work in an environment which directly resonates with their audience. These artists cannot be grouped together stylistically but are linked more readily by attitude.

Featuring video, sculpture and work created directly onto the gallery walls, Outsiders mirrors the ethos of the Lazarides Gallery with which all the artists are affiliated. This unique operation has challenged the definitions of and art by bringing the outside, in. The exhibition has been curated by David Thorp.

Conor Harrington will produce his largest wall-based work to date, covering an entire length of the gallery with his unique fusion of fine art and techniques a far cry from the gritty, New York underpass which he transformed last month. Lucy McLauchlan will be adorning the gallery walls with her folk-like, psychedelic motifs in her signature monochrome palette. Internationally recognised artist Todd James a.k.a REAS, who began his career as a child in the New York City subway system and who reigns as one of graffitis best known artists, has been commissioned to make a new piece of work for the gallerys Window Box which can be viewed outside, from street level.

The exhibition also includes New York collective Faile, Italian-born Blu and French photographer JR, whose huge graphic murals all covered the side of Tate Modern this summer.

Invader, famous for leaving Space Invader Rubix Cube aliens around the globe will be inside and out of the gallery spaces. Portuguese artist Vhilss portraits will be carved into, and painted on top of, layers and layers of billboard posters. Advertising and consumer culture references can also be found in Zevss Liquidated Logos series where global brands appear to melt before our eyes.

Antony Micallef, who recently unveiled four major sculptures at the Royal Academy, and Paul Insect, whose work stands in some of the UKs most important collections, will present major new works on canvas. As a painter typically know for portrait painting, Jonathan Yeo has recently swapped the medium of paint for the craftsmanship of collage: his portraits of George Bush and Paris Hilton, unveiled recently in the Outsiders show in New York, are his most controversial works to date.

Miranda Donavans painted landscapes depict urban streets scrawled over with colourful graffiti, while trained taxidermist-cum-artist Polly Morgan presents unnerving tableauxs of animals and birds which poetically provoke questions of beauty and mortality. Since rising to fame in 2005, Morgan has been hotly collected by art dealers and celebrities across the globe.

Outsiders looks at the work of some artists who have their roots in the street but have developed to embrace other areas of activity.

black performers with a job rather than two? Or to just see all those Wayanses hire themselves to put on a show again? Yeah, "Little Man" was an embarrassment, but I say, c'mon, TV, give them another chance! They can be good again!

As for Hughley's show I was amazed by the "shut your mouth bitches" line from Ashy Larry, if only because I'm watching CNN. It's one thing to be wild and raunchy on Comedy Central, home of everything raunchy in comedy, they have no morals. They show Sarah Silverman with a potty mouth and a bed-wetting problem, South Park and that gross Kenny Versus Spenny thing that I hope to dear God was canceled.

Seeing Grier play a transsexual whose boob keeps popping out is actually at home in that environment. But Hughley is his own island on a network that is primarily about straight news. And it is surreal and painful to watch actual reporters interact with Hughley as opposed to joke reporters like the ones on Chocolate News and The Daily Show. Real reporters are not funny and I image the ones who showed up for Hughley's premiere episode were wondering why CNN was wasting their news gathering time? You work hard, you pound the pavement, you pester sources and you beg your producer for camera time and this is what they give you?

Hughley seems out of place on the network, even if he did get a newsworthy nugget out of yet another defecting Republican, this time former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan who said last week that he is voting for Barack Obama on Hughley's show. I hate to say this, but ... Glen Beck's show made more sense. Now, I don't like Glen Beck and Beck has run off to FOX News, leaving his old gig at CNN Headline News, but Beck was/is supposed to be funny and did a political/news-of-the-day interview show that didn't make me want to drink Drano. It would have made more sense for CNN to find someone not necessarily like Beck, but someone with his basic skills set, like Whoopi Goldberg, Dennis Miller or Lewis Black, heck, Eddie Murphy might do it if you ask nice enough, but someone who has the ability to be funny and can also pull off a decent interview.

Naturally, I wasn't the only person "amazed" by Hughley's show. Dr. Boyce Watkins (and many other critics, primarily black) are pretty much ready to grab the pitchforks and torches and send DL back to the comedy plantation from wince he came.
In the following clip, Watkins shouts out every black comedian as being cool-to-great with the exception of Hughley who he says he's never been impressed by.

"You don't bring a gun to a baby shower. You don't put a liquor sign in a church," Watkins gripes, before getting into the flip side of it, that CNN has had many black commentators and journalists, yet the first African American to get their own show on CNN is DL, a comedian. Watkins name drops Roland Martin, mentioning that he's been on a regular on CNN for a while yet has no show.
Um ... yeah. I noticed that too.

The Bradley effect, less commonly called the Wilder effect, is a proposed explanation for observed discrepancies between voter opinion polls and election outcomes in some American political campaigns when a white candidate and a non-white candidate (African-American??) run against each other. Named for Tom Bradley, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor's race despite being ahead in some voter polls, the Bradley effect refers to an alleged tendency on the part of some voters to tell pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for a black candidate, and yet, on election day, vote for his/her white opponent.

The theory of the Bradley effect is that the inaccurate polls have been skewed by the phenomenon of social desirability bias. Specifically, some white voters give inaccurate polling responses for fear that, by stating their true preference, they will open themselves to criticism of racial motivation. The reluctance to give accurate polling answers has sometimes extended to post-election exit polls as well. The race of the pollster conducting the interview may factor in to voters' answers.

Some analysts have dismissed the theory of the Bradley effect as "baseless", while others argue that it may have existed in past elections, but not in more recent ones. One analysis of 133 senate and gubernatorial elections between 1989 and 2006 suggests that "before 1996, the median gap for black candidates was 3.1 percentage points, while for subsequent years it was -0.3 percentage points
Latest In 2006, there was speculation that the Bradley effect might appear in the Tennessee race for United States Senator between Harold Ford, Jr. and white candidate Bob Corker. This weekend was full of interesting tidbits for me. I have to run off to work in a hot second so Ill keep this one limited to the dining rumors:

First, I wondered the other day what exactly the new Michael Symon restaurant inside the Book-Cadillac would be--I got the answer. (Admittedly this information was likely readily available online, but I didnt feel like looking for it. So there.) It will be called Roast and it will be a steakhouse. Very beefy. Cant wait.

Second, there is a new French restaurant opening soon across the street from Buzz Bar (or, what used to be Buzz Bar and still has the Buzz Bar sign but is not in fact open). It was supposed to open July 1st--thats what the sign said--but the inside is still looking pretty gutted. These things never happen on time anyway. My question: classic French or French fusion? And whos the chef? Please please please let it be Shawn Mac...Id really like to see him land on his feet and stay in the city post-AV.

Third, apparently the owner of the Good Girls Go to Paris crepe stand is already talking about opening a second location in Eastern Market, possibly even with a little cafe area where people can sit and eat their crepes. Instead of doing what I did, which was stop by on my way to work and eat this overflowing crepe from a paper plate while doing 80 on the Lodge. Employers Liability Insurance - this type of insurance was made compulsory by the Employers Liability Protection Act of 1969 and covers almost all employees. The definition of an employee is very wide and can include volunteers, persons on work experience from schools and persons borrowed or hired from other companies. The law also lays down a minimum amount of cover required which at the present moment is 5,000,000 although it is the usual practice of most insurers to provide 10,000,000 cover. As claims arising under this type of cover can take a while to manifest, you are required to keep certificates of Employers Liability for a period of 40(forty) years after they have expired. The act also requires that you obtain a certificate of Employers Liability from your insurers and display it where it can been seen by your employees, failure to display a certificate can lead to a 1000 fine.
Legal Expenses Insurance - this form of insurance, Legal Expenses Insurance has become very popular in recent years. If you run a business, this type of cover can often be purchased quite cheaply, sometimes it is rated on the turn over of your business, the more you turnover, the more your Business Legal Protection Insurance Policy will cost you. Although General Policies are on sales, it may be possible to obtain a cover which has been specially designed for your trade. You may find that you already have Legal Expenses insurance included as part of a package of other covers such as Shop Insurance or sometimes even Liability Insurance. If you are an Individual, your insurance advisor should be able to sell your Motorist Legal protection Insurance cover to help you recover uninsured losses under a motor insurance contract. If you are a Homeowner, your insurance advisor should be able to sell you a Legal Expenses Insurance to help you with consumer disputes etc. If you are worried about Legal Expenses, you should always check the insurers Key Facts document before you buy cover to make sure that you have the cover you require. LINCOLN CONSPIRATORS CONVICTED on this day in 1865 by a military tribunal, who found them guilty of plotting or aiding and abetting in the April 14 assassination of the president, and a broader plot to kill Vice President Johnson, General Ulysses Grant, and Secretary of State William Seward who was attacked with a knife in his bed, and left for dead. Controversy has reigned for more than 140 years about the involvement of some of those who were convicted.

The SALVATION ARMY was founded in East London this day in 1865 by revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine. The goal was to wage war against poverty and the indifference of religion to human ills. It didnt get the name by which we know it until 1878; in the beginning, it was called the Christian Mission, though from the outset, clergy were officers and others were recruits or soldiers, as the organization based its structure on that of the British army.

CHILDREN BANNED FROM THEATERS in New York on this day in 1916, not because of loud or unruly behavior, but because of a polio outbreak, and concern that children not be allowed to mix and mingle and spread the disease. It established the model for theater closures in 1919 when the global influenza epidemic struck, and new film releases were halted.

BLACK SOX scandal broke on this day in 1921, as members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series. Many recall the famous line from a little boy to player Shoeless Joe Jackson, Say it isnt so, Joe. It was, in fact, a complicated tale that wasnt able to be fully told at the time. Sox owner Charles Comiskey routinely mistreated and grossly underpaid his players, and he produced confessions of their accepting bribes in the midst of a trial, ostensibly to take the heat off himself. The leagues other owners, fearing a growing scandal that could ruin the game, hired Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis as the new Commissioner of Baseball, because he was a hard-liner who simply banned the accused players from the game. Some of those players were baseballs best, so banning them meant the leagues other teams would not face them on the field. Landis was also a hard-line white Southern racist, who banned black players from the league for his entire tenure, which lasted into the 1940s, offering a final sad irony to the moniker of Black Sox.

LABOR WINS VICTORY on this day in 1935, when FDR signed the Wagner Act. It guaranteed workers the right to choose their own union, and to strike, and it forbade the brutal practices often used by bosses and mill owners to prevent workers from organizing or seeking safety standards. The bill had initially been opposed by President Roosevelt when Sen. Robert Wagner of New York introduced it. FDR instead chose his own National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA), but when the Supreme Court knocked that down, the pragmatic FDR embraced Wagners old bill, which was passed by Congress and signed into law by the president.

BIKINI INTRODUCED this day in 1946 by French designer Louis Reard, who named the daring two-piece swimsuit after Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific, scene of a US atomic bomb test earlier that week. Western Europeans joyously greeted the freedom of the first war-free summer in years, and French designers were rushing to provide fashion that would express joy and freedom. How ironic that it was named after the test site of a horrific new weapon.

ELVIS RECORDED s All Right, Mama on this day in 1954. It was the impromptu blues jamming between recorded tracks that most caught the interest of producer Sam Phillips, who had Elvis record an improved version of Arthur Crudups song on this day, and the song would become a local hit on Memphis radio just two days later. It is cited by many as the birth of rock and roll.

ARTHUR ASHE became the first black male player to win the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, defeating heavily-favored fellow American Jimmy Connors, on this day in 1975. His victory came one day short of 18 years since Althea Gibson had become the first black woman player to win the championship. Ashe died of AIDS in 1993. In 1997, the US Opens new main court was named Arthur Ashe Stadium.
