If Freddie Mercury of the rock band Queen were alive today, would he have voted Yes or No on Proposition 8, California's heavily controversial gay marriage amendment? I believe that Freddie Mercury would have cast a Yes vote, yes meaning, in the case of Proposition 8, that he would favor traditional marriage between a man and his wife, and not gay marriage.

Why? The love of Freddie Mercury's life was a woman named Mary Austin, in spite of his many sexual liasons with men. Freddie said that he considered Mary Austin to be his wife. *
Did Freddie Mercury write the song entitled "Love of My Life," for a man? No, the song "Love of My Life" was written for Mary Austin. **

Note: View You Tube slide show of Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin below.

"In the early 1970s Mercury had a long-term relationship with a girlfriend named Mary Austin (whom he had met through guitarist Brian May). He lived with Austin for many years. However, by the mid-1970s, the singer began an affair with a male record executive at Elektra Records; this ultimately resulted in the end of his relationship with Austin.[40] Mercury and Austin nevertheless remained close friends through the years, with Mercury often referring to her as his only true friend. In a 1985 interview, Mercury said of Austin, "All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary [Austin], but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary, and I don't want anybody else. *To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that's enough for me."[41] **He also wrote several songs about Austin, the most notable of which is 'Love of My Life'. Mercury was also the godfather of Mary's eldest son, Richard.[33]" 1

In fact, Freddie loved Mary so much that he left most of his enormous wealth Mary Austin.

"In his will Mercury left the vast majority of his wealth, including his home and recording royalties, to Mary Austin, and the remainder to his parents and sister. He further left 500,000 to his chef Joe Fanelli, 500,000 to his personal assistant Peter Freestone, 100,000 to his driver Terry Giddings, and 500,000 to Jim Hutton.[50] Mary Austin continues to live at Mercury's home, Garden Lodge, Kensington, with her family.[50] Hutton moved back to the Republic of Ireland permanently in 1995, where he still lives. He was involved in a 2000 biography of Mercury, Freddie Mercury, the Untold Story, and also gave an interview for The Times for what would have been Mercury's 60th birthday.cf. [46]" 1

The singer Micheal Jackson has decided to give up the title to his Neverland ranch and transfer the deed to a company that he partly controls. He filed a grant deed on Monday on the ranch that would make the new owner an entity called the Sycamore Valley Ranch Co. Sycamore Valley Ranch Co. is a joint venture between Jackson and an affiliate of Colony Capital LLC.

Earlier this year, Jackson went into default on the $24.5 million that he owes on the property and Colony Capital bailed him out. Colony Capital is a Los Angeles-based real estate investment company that is ran by the billionaire Tom Barrack. The company also owns several properties in Las Vegas, including the Las Vegas Hilton. Neverland Ranch was called Sycamore Valley Ranch before Jackson bought it in 1988 and turned it into a miniature amusement park where thousands of children were invited to the property.

Jackson has been struggling to pay his debts to the ranch since his arrest in 2003 where he was accused of molesting a 13 year boy at the ranch. He has not been to the property since being acquitted of the charges.

So, can we talk, you know, privately about Angelina Jolie?
I know, I know, shes a saint and one dare not speak ill of cultural idols, only there are a few things that are kind of unsettling about her, and not just that she once wore then-husband Billy Bob Thorntons blood clot around her neck or that shes prone to french kissing her brother in public.
Admittedly, Jolie has grown up quite a bit since exhibiting all that creepy behaviour and, at 33, is today the picture of serene motherhood. (And anorexia, too, but well get to that in a few paragraphs.)
These days Ms. Jolie is all about her kids, three of them adopted from Third World locales where she has been working, tirelessly to be sure, as a goodwill ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency.
She signed up for the job after a film shoot in Cambodia, where she was appalled at the conditions faced by the local children, and she even returned home as a single mom with mohawked baby Maddox, who is now seven, adding to the clan in short order with the adoptions of Zahara from Ethiopia, whos now three, and almost-five-year-old Pax from Vietnam.
Jolie reportedly gives away a third of her substantial income and is constantly jetting off to places like the Congo, using her considerable presence and profile to help raise awareness about the plight of the planets less fortunate.
Along the way she hooked up with pretty boy Brad Pitt, openly stealing him from his American sweetheart wife Jennifer Aniston and then promptly popping out three kids of their own two-year-old Shiloh and four-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne something she said would never do because she always thought it was selfish to give birth when there were so many needy children already out there, but clearly changed her mind when she laid eyes on Mr. Pitt. And who can blame her?
Anyway, the unsettling stuff.
Well, theres that whole stealing someones husband thing, which is unseemly at best but wouldnt be anyones business, and its not like we were on Team Aniston anyway, except why did Jolie have to blab to the world about it in a recent interview, gloat even, by beaming that not all children get to watch a movie, in this case Mr. Mrs. Smith, in which their parents fell in love.
So not cool, to paraphrase the ex-Mrs. Pitt.
And then theres the acting thing which, this week, Jolie vowed to retire from, what with all the kids and her apparent need to up stakes and move house about every three weeks.
On the publicity circuit this week for The Changeling, her new movie, Jolie hinted that she would quit acting to spend more time with the family.
I dont plan to keep acting very long, she said in an interview. m ready to do a few things now and fade away and get ready to be a grandma one day.
But before you could say Holy My Dad is Jon Voight, she backtracked, telling reporters at a news conference Tuesday that m not making some retirement announcement. I have a big family and a lot of responsibility at home, and I have the good fortune to financially not have to work all the time. I just feel privileged that I get to be home a lot. Maybe eventually Ill stop (acting).
To which one, if they were truly honest, truly a movie buff, would say: Rats, we were so close.
I know, thats mean, but seriously, she has made 34 films since 1982, too many of them box-office disappointments. And, honestly, can you name five of them?
Lets see, Lara Croft, a couple of times. Oh, and 1999s Girl, Interrupted, in which she was good enough to earn an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
And The Changeling, out this month and which I havent seen but fully intend to, because I hear her performance as a based-on-a-true-story mother who loses her child and is then committed to an institution has Academy Award written all over it.
That would be nice because, truth is, most of her movies and performances have been less than memorable and yet, yet, shes considered one of the worlds most accomplished, and certainly famous, actresses. And shes paid accordingly, earning between $12 and $15 million a movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Only Reese Witherspoon is currently earning more per movie than Jolie.
And then theres the Skeletor thing.
Jolie has a lovely countenance and its not hard to understand why men, especially, are attracted to her: theres that slightly dangerous sexual mystery, the bee-sting lips, the tattoos, the long curly hair, the bedroom eyes, the lesbian affair.
But whats with the visible bones, and the sinew, and the rail-thin profile with those x-ray arms with the big claw-like hands that, when theyre not attached to a tiny child, hang languidly past her knees, the blood vessels popping.
Its odd, too, how other celebrities are hounded beyond belief by the celebrity press for being skinny beyond healthy belief Nicole Richie, Lara Flynn Boyle, Teri Hatcher, Kelly Ripa, Nicole Kidman, Kate Bosworth, Nicky Hilton and Keri Russell are just a few examples and yet no one, not one gossip columnist or pop culture pundit or opinionated television doctor, has ever mentioned that Jolie is far more scary-skinny than she should be.
Does it matter?
You bet. We are living in a time when celebrities like movie stars and pop singers and fashion models, indeed, the entertainment industry in general, hold an unholy influence over our young people, from their social behavior to the way they dress to their self-image, and when we as a society decide to place someone like Jolie on that cultural pedestal and no one could argue shes floating on the top why arent we questioning just what it is that she represents, just what it is that makes her such a cherished icon.
But then maybe Im the only one who finds Jolie, the feted humanitarian Oscar winner but also the adulterous anorexic unmarried mom, just a little unsettling in that particular role.

Helping your young acting hopeful prepare for a successful acting career can be an incredibly rewarding experience for the parent. All parents like seeing their children being creative, expressing themselves, and, most importantly, having fun.
It should be stated, however, that forcing a child to participate in any pursuit they dont like is not just counterproductive but harmful to the child. Your role, as the acting hopefuls parent, is to caringly nurture your childrens expressed interests and not force them into a pursuit in order to live vicariously through them. One would have to be born under a rock to have missed some of the more public examples of what can happen when children are forced into an acting career they never wanted.
That being said, there are some very simple pointers you can follow that will have a powerful impact in the immediate sense and create long-term opportunities for the professional acting success of your son or daughter.
Start Early: Human beings, it would seem, are all natural born actors. Early in their lives, they often spend entire afternoons play-acting imaginary scenarios. Sadly, as many of us get older, we forget how much fun acting can be. By exposing your youngsters, at an early age, to the concept of acting, you are, in effect, introducing them to something at which they are already. Regardless of whether its soccer, football, chess, or acting, childhood pursuits should always be fun. By giving your children an early glimpse of acting while they are young and predisposed to the concept, you dramatically increase the odds of their long-term success. Acting Camps provide the perfect vehicle for your children to immerse themselves in the creative fun acting can provide. What they gain from the camp experience has as much to do with you, the parent, as it does the camp itself. With the internet woven into the fabric of our lives, there is simply no excuse for parents not doing due-diligence research on any acting camp they are considering. A little research time, up front, can save you a lot of money, effort, and disappointment later.
After your children have started their first camp, make sure that they are having fun. If not, first try finding a better-suited program and see if that resolves the issue. If not, you may need to consider the fact that acting may not be of interest to them at that point in their lives. If that is the case, and the situation is handled carefully, it may well become one as they get older. Forcing the issue now will virtually guarantee that your child will never enjoy the art. If there isnt a fit, back off and give them some time. Find out what it was about the camp experience they didnt like. More importantly, find out what things (even if only a few) they actually did like about the camp. Pay attention to these answers. There is a good chance that, armed with this information, you can research other camps that may be better suited to your childs tastes and artistic needs. Find a different camp, try again next year, and until then dont push or make a big deal out of it.
Be Involved: Acting is a passion and, like flame, it needs fuel in order to burn. A parents support and involvement has no equal as that fuel. Acting Camp is about far more than just what happens during the time your child attends. What happens before and after camp is as important as the camp itself. Furthermore, if you have an uninterested attitude towards your childrens pursuits then their attitude will soon follow your own. Help them prepare for the camp experience beforehand. If you have done your research, then you are well-versed in what your children will be learning and doing. Help them feel prepared for it and they will have the kind of fun that only self-confidence brings. After Camp is over, spend a lot of time revisiting what they experienced and learned. Often, there are exercises and drama games that can be fun for the whole family to recreate. Children look to their parents for validation. Be that validation for your young actor or actress and you have armed them well for success.
Be Selective: Acting Camps are as varied as the children who attend them. Take the time to research, research, research. If your children are new to the art, look for fun-filled camps that focus more on the enjoyment of the experience than the knowledge gained. As your children progress, they will want, as well as need, more challenges for their minds. Complacency destroys drive, and an unchallenged mind can hardly avoid becoming complacent. Acting Camp should always be fun, but as your children grow they will develop a sense of pride in their craft and will be eager to take the challenge to the next level. Do your homework and be prepared to provide that challenge in their next camp.
Preparing For the Next Step: Eventually your children (and I use that term loosely here) will be ready to move on to acting school. As you have watched and participated with your children in their acting youth, youll no doubt have picked up on where their artistic talents and drive really lie. Research schools that have well-respected programs, and degrees, in those areas. This next step is an expensive one, so doing your research here actually does pay. Just as acting camps have helped form your childrens creative foundations, so acting schools will take it to that next, and this time, professional level.

There's a scene in The West Wing where Leo McGarry laments the disappointing nature of "the future," and asks why none of the cool stuff he was promised as a child ever came to fruition. In short, he asks, "Where's my jet pack?"

Well, my own personal jet pack arrived today and it's called The New Xbox Experience. Now, keep in mind, I'm a very easy futurist to please so basically all it took for me to squeal with joy was the realization that I can use my Netflix and XBox accounts TOGETHER. Have a hankering to watch Season One "Doctor Who?" No need to wait for the mail, run down to the local Blockbuster or even move my ass off the couch one single inch -- nope, now I can just queue it up and press play and voila, there it is! Like magic, people, like goddamn MAGIC!

Now I know I can easily download stuff from the internets and watch it on my computer screen but we all know deep down that's not at all as cool as watching it on the actual TV where the little people live to entertain me.

As for the NXE's other features -- well, apparently, there's games and shit on there too and you can make little avatars (*cough*notatalllikemiis*cough*) but mostly -- NETFLIX TELEPORTED RIGHT INTO MY FREAKIN' TV!!!! OMFG!!!

If you'll excuse me, I have Season Two of "Coach" to watch followed by seven or eight hours of "Gimme a Break." I am going to become a shut-in and it's going to be AWESOME!

P.S. I promise not to capitalize this much ever again. Mostly because I'll be too busy watching TV.

still owed him 20,000.

He said: My immediate reaction to his sad passing is not about the death of someone who was once the owner of a football club. My thoughts go out straight away to the person who was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was the head of a household and not just a man who had a vision for a football club.

Gretna would not have gone out of business if Brooks had been able to maintain good health. He was the type of man whom if he said he would give you something always delivered his promise.

I wouldnt want his reputation to be soiled in any way because of the circumstances that led to Gretna going under. I was owed 20,000 by him but there would have been no outstanding debt to me or anybody else if he had been spared his illness worsening.

"I know there were people who towards the end thought Brooks was at it and had simply disappeared to avoid facing the consequences at Gretna, but I never believed that to be true. Not for a second.

"As far as I am concerned there will never be another chairman like him. His bravery shone through because he knew his condition could take a turn for the worse at any time but I know he refused to let his workload lessen.

JOHN ROBERT POWERS ACTING AND MODELING STUDENT EXCELS IN CLASSES FOR TELEVISION COMMERCIALS, ACTING MONOLOGUES, FASHION PRINT AND RUNWAY MODELING
Toronto Based John Robert Powers Parent Reflects on Child’s Positive Experience with John Robert Powers Acting and Modeling School
(Los Angeles, November 12, 2008) – When Robin Wilson signed her son, Login Wilson, up for acting and modeling classes at the local John Robert Powers school in Toronto, Canada she had no idea how influential the classes would be for her young son.  Like so many parents with young children Robin and her husband were looking for after school activities that would encourage development and self confidence for their son Login.  Robin had heard positive things about the Toronto based John Robert Powers from other parents who had enrolled their children in the acting and modeling classes but thought Login should try soccer first but Login wasn’t enjoying the classes and spent most of his time lying on the ground or asking if he could be goalie so that he wouldn’t have to run.  “The funny thing is both my husband and I are really good athletes but Login just didn’t have any interest whatsoever.  It was hard for us to find anything that Login was interested in doing,” said Robin Wilson.
This all changed drastically when Robin enrolled Login into John Robert Powers Toronto.  They initially had him attending acting and modeling classes once a week but Login responded so well to the John Robert Powers classes that Robin and her husband started sending Login three to four times a week especially when time came for a major talent competition hosted in Vancouver in early September.  John Robert Powers enrolled Login in classes that taught him how to act in television commercials, scene acting and monologues and how to properly model for fashion print, commercials and runway.  Login’s mother proudly exclaimed, “In just three months Login has memorized more than 10 commercials and three monologues – he’s just a sponge!”  Robin went on to say, “We weren’t sure if this would be it or not, but we thought, he likes to perform, he likes to act, so let’s give our hand at this. No expectation, let’s make this fun and see where he goes with it,” she said.  “And now, it’s just overwhelming.  He’s meeting with people - he’s ready to work. He’s just developed so much and is so focused and it’s all thanks to John Robert Powers.”
President of John Robert Powers, Ron Patterson, says he often sees this type of change in students who attend John Robert Powers school classes. “I am very pleased to hear about Login Wilson’s development at John Robert Powers in Toronto.  Our Toronto school is one of the strongest schools we have and it doesn’t surprise me in the least that Login is responding so well to his acting and modeling classes,” said Ron Patterson.  “I’m glad his parents are able to witness his continued progress and development.  When it comes to teaching fashion print and runway modeling, monologues and commercial acting no school is more prepared than John Robert Powers and its eighty year legacy.”
Robin went on to explain that Login loves the attention and loves to entertain.  The most rewarding aspect of the experience for Robin and her husband has been seeing Login’s efforts get acknowledged, and his mindset after doing a great job.  “The capability is rewarding.  You see him work so hard and memorize it, and do the best he can do-it just blows you away,” Robin said.
Ron Patterson echoes this sentiment, “Time and time again I see children come to John Robert Powers wanting to become stars and you know some of them end up on national television and in films but all the students leave John Robert Powers with refreshed confidence, more dignity and self assuredness that reflect in all areas of their lives.  Children and teenagers who take classes at John Robert Powers are better public speakers, know how to conduct themselves in job and college interviews and know how to dress well and act becomingly.  Personal development is key at John Robert Powers,” concluded Ron Patterson.
If Login continues to pursue modeling and acting, the next step for his parents will be to learn the rights of children when it comes to working and how it will affect his schoolwork and his income.  Robin noted that they would have to explore the alternatives for his studies; if a child is on set for a certain amount of hours, then the child must have a tutor. The John Robert Powers school stresses that education is key, and the kid’s grades need be up to par.  The next step for Login is to search out an agent.  John Robert Powers Toronto is frequently visited by top local agents and casting directors from Hollywood and New York.
John Robert Powers is an internationally recognized acting and modeling school system with locations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.   For over eighty years, John Robert Powers has been training students in personal development.  John Robert Powers provides every student with the schooling, guidance, and confidence to further their individual potential and to reach their highest career goals.
John Robert Powers actors and models have appeared in national commercials, television shows and films such as Levi Strauss Co., Dr. Pepper, Revlon, Apple Computers, Target, Chevrolet, American Idol, Superman Returns, The Changeling and the Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.

To know about Johnny Cash acting career, first you have to ask well, who is Johnny Cash? He was first and foremost known as a singer.
Johnny Cash was a Grammy Award-winning musician and songwriter, who was hailed as one of the most influential in his field of the 20th century.
Hello, Im Johnny Cash
This line was how Johnny Cash used to start his acts whenever he was performing onstage.
Johnny Cash was born to parents Ray and Carrie in Kingsland, Arkansas. It was said that the name was formed because his parents couldnt agree what his name should be.
It became a dilemma when he entered the United States Air Force because it wouldnt accept the initials J.R. as his real first name. That was when he used John R. Cash to be his legal name.
Most of his songs were inspired by the life his family led when he was growing up. Johnny Cash has six siblings. Tommy Cash, a younger brother, also made it as a country artist. Johnny Cash started working in the cotton fields by the age of five. This was where he got the inspiration for the song Five Feet High and Rising.

You can call me Soccer Dad. No, I am not the illustrious and far more famous Soccer Dad of the blogosphere. I am just another Joe who answered the call to action and volunteered to coach his child's team.

For the past couple of years I have dedicated several hours each week to the grand task of coaching. And while I have enjoyed it, I must say that this year has been far more fun than years past. The easiest explanation is that the kids are finally mature enough to really play the game.

Don't get me wrong, I have always enjoyed this. It is a lot of fun getting out there and working with the children. But in the past it was a bit like herding cats. You'd work hard on teaching the kids what to do and when but you never really knew what would happen. The game would start and you'd watch as two or three of your young charges would see a grasshopper or a bird and lose all interest in playing.

So you'd spend a few minutes trying to encourage them to stop chasing butterflies and chase the ball instead. Sometimes you'd meet with success and sometimes it was a complete failure.

But this year has been a different story. The boys get it. They understand the game and want to play. Now the big struggle has been dealing with only one hour of practice each week. It really isn't enough time to teach/work on all of the skills they need to be successful.

And of course there is the bonus of dealing with the parents/relatives who decide that they know how to coach better than you do. I rather think that it is similar to what some of my rabbi friends deal with when they interact with their congregants. There is always some gadfly who wants/needs to tell you what you are doing wrong and how you could do it better.

But the advantage I have over your shul rabbi is that this is not my livelihood. I remind them that we're there to have fun and that this is the main focus. I also get to say things like "you're going to look awfully funny with my size 12 cleat sticking out of your ass" or "I bet that being forced to swallow a soccer ball is really uncomfortable."

You'd be surprised how fast they adjust their attitude. Matter of fact I am going to recommend that my pals in the rabbinate consider taking a similar tack. Next time the shul president provides you with unrestrained criticism take the closet siddur and smack them across the head. As they look up at you in shock you can explain that you took their words to heart and are assisting them in davening with more kavanah.

Anyhoo, I spent a chunk of time this evening preparing for the next couple of games. League rules mandate that every child get a chance to play every position. I happen to support that, at least for the younger kids. It does present a few challenges.

The big one is that you can't maintain your strongest lineup for the entire game, at least not if you follow the rules. This is one of those rules that some coaches have a tough time with. They hate losing so they try to ignore it.

Confession: In a preseason coache's meeting I was asked to explain my coaching philosophy. I looked the guy dead in the eye and said "sweep the leg." He looked at me and said that he didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

I told him that Miyagi and Daniel-san would be happy to explain it to him. He asked me if that was the name of a bar. I said no and told him that there was a great bar called The Cobra Kai and that he ought to try it.

And then I wandered off and muttered to myself about stupid pop culture references. Is it really almost 25 years since the movie came out. Damn, I am getting old.

Laura Bush and Michelle Obama meet. First lady Laura Bush shared some tips with Michelle Obama on how to survive in the White House - particularly with young daughters, according to Reuters. As she gave Michelle Obama a tour of the mansion that will soon be her home. It was a bit of a momentous day, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters on a flight from Washington to Chicago about the Obamas visit to the White House Monday, less than one week after Barack Obama won a historic election to succeed President George W. Bush.  I dont know that I would characterize him as awestruck. Read the rest here.
The High Court upholds evidence. By a slight majority the Supreme Court said on Monday that the lives of the victim can be weighed as evidence in determining the fate of the accusers. The justices turned down appeals from two Los Angeles convicted murderers who said it was unfair that videotapes of the victims lives were played for jurors before they decided the killers should die.  Defense lawyers had argued that this cinematic evidence . . . designed to play on the jurys emotions should be excluded from a sentencing hearing in a capital case. In the first case, the justices rejected an appeal from Douglas Kelly, who was sentenced to death for the 1993 rape, robbery and murder of Sara Weir. She was found dead in a North Hollywood apartment after being stabbed 29 times. The justices turned down a similar appeal from Samuel Zamudio, who was convicted in 1997 of murdering an elderly couple in South Gate. In both cases, video of the victims were played for their jurors. However, Stevens wrote, the videos added nothing relevant to the jurys deliberations.  Justices David H. Souter and Stephen G. Breyer agreed the court should take up the issue, but it takes four votes in the high court to grant an appeal.

Ingmar Bergman never won a competitive Oscar. Hard to believe, but out of all his nominations for writing, directing, and producing, the Swedish cinema giant went 0 for 9. (He did win the Academy's honorary Irving Thalberg prize in 1970.) He was nominated for both writing and directing awards for his monumental swan song, 1983's Fanny Alexander, but that was the year that Terms of Endearment was not to be denied. James L. Brooks (pictured) won three of that film's many Oscars that year, for directing, writing, and producing the now-classic tearjerker. By usual Academy Awards logic, Bergman didn't really have a chance at a Directing prize that year, since his movie was not also nominated for Best Picture (though it did win Best Foreign Language Film). Same with Mike Nichols, whose Silkwood displayed uncharacteristically quiet and measured work from the director, but which also failed to score a Best Picture nod. (Conversely, the two Best Picture nominees that went unrepresented in the Best Director race were The Big Chill and The Right Stuff, thus shortchanging Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman. Sorry, guys.)
Also in the directing competition in 1983: Peter Yates for The Dresser, an exquisitely acted movie that nonetheless looks stagebound and claustrophobic, though that fits the story's backstage setting; and Bruce Beresford for the homespun Tender Mercies, a movie whose gentle subtlety has often been mistaken for blandness and inertia. Still, Beresford coached Robert Duvall to his only Oscar win and told a beautiful, sad story of loss and redemption.
Looking back from today's perspective, which of these directors do you think did the best job? Vote in our poll, and list your comments below. (For a refresher, watch the clips embedded after the jump, which may contain some NSFW language.) Remember, we'll be running the Recall the Gold surveys every Tuesday and Thursday until January, so you may go back at any time and vote in the other polls (click here to see them all), reexamining the Oscar races of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years ago. On Thursday, Nov. 13, we'll look at the 1998 Best Actress competition. Watch also for commentary and context throughout EW.com, including on Dave Karger's Oscar Watch blog.

Over the last couple of years I've developed a great appreciation for Eleanor Parker, who for most of my life I identified with only one role, "The Baroness" in THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965). I've been especially impressed with Parker's earlier work in THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU (1944) and PRIDE OF THE MARINES (1945). (Links for reviews of these and other Parker movies are at the bottom of this post.)

Thanks to the kindness of Carrie at Classic Ramblings, I was able to see a Parker film which was very high on my viewing wish list, THE VOICE OF THE TURTLE. What a treat! It's a charming, very romantic "feel good" movie which I'm sure I'll watch again many times in the future.

Based on a long-running play, THE VOICE OF THE TURTLE is about Sally Middleton (Eleanor Parker), a young New York actress looking for work but decidedly not looking for love, having been dumped one time too many by men who aren't interested in a serious relationship.

Enter Bill (Ronald Reagan), a soldier on weekend leave who has a date with Sally's flighty friend Olive (Eve Arden). When Olive cancels her date with Bill in order to go out with someone else, Bill and Sally go out together instead, which ends with an exhausted Bill (platonically) spending the night on Sally's living room sofa bed. Over the course of the weekend, Sally and Bill fall in love, but this time it's Sally who's afraid of commitment.

Parker and Reagan are absolutely delightful together. Parker's quirky, somewhat ditzy Sally, who believes her kitchen appliances have feelings and is terrified of opening the drawer with her egg beater, is great fun; her "matching" routine every time she pours two drinks is funnier each time she does it.

Just Show Up: So You Want to Be some Actor

My brother fell in love when he was only ten years old. In fact, it was love at first sight. The moment he set eyes on his Christmas gift that year, there was no looking back. His first guitar opened up a whole new world for him, and he would play for hours, lost in another world. Nothing much has changed. He still locks himself in his room and enters a world where unspeakable joy threads its way through his fingers and into the strings of his guitar. Nothing else can lift him from the doldrums like an hour spent strumming on his handmade acoustic guitar. It was, and still is, a place to go when he needs to fill his tank. But it's more than that: music feeds his soul, nourishes every part of him, and when he dips his hand in the well of creative exploration, his spirit expands and lets in more light.

Of course, he would wave away my poetic ramblings. "It just makes me feel good, that's all, pure and simple," he would say.

For one breathless moment, there are no need for words, no expectations, either from the outer world or himself, and when he's on stage, he experiences a deeper connection with others.

It should come as no surprise, then, that his son, Christian, is a gifted drummer. Already, at eight years old, he has knocked the socks off of older, more experienced drummers. "How did he learn to play like that?" they ask. His father merely shakes his head and says, "I don't know, he just picked up the sticks one day, and away he went.

Jessica Biel is on the promotion circuit for her new movie Easy Virtue, which comes out next month. Jessica stars alongside Colin Firth, Ben Barnes and Kristin Scott Thomas in the movie based on a Noel Coward play, which opens November 7. The movie finds Jessica playing Larita Huntington, an American woman who marries a British man, John Whittaker (Ben). After bringing her home to meet the parents, the couples relationship comes under intense scrutiny from Johns mother, Veronica (Kristin). In a new interview with Britains Marie Claire for the magazines December issue, the Seventh Heaven actress finds the role parallels her own life as her relationship as girlfriend of pop star Justin Timberlake is always under scrutiny. Biel tells the mag:
s hard. Its the hardest part of this whole wonderful, bizarre lifestyle and profession. You have to be Zen about it, because it can make you crazy. There are times when Ive been followed by men with giant cameras in giant SUVs all day long. It scares the crap out of me and I literally come home and emotionally erupt and cry it out and sit on the floor and think, Do I really want this?
Ignoring her self pity party (sorry had to say it) the mag also asks the 26-year-old Biel whether motherhood is beckoning?
I kind of go back and forth about marriage and kids. I feel like, if its an organic way for me and the right time in my life, then, yeah. If its right, itll be right but, at this moment, that seems completely foreign. I tell you, I have so many friends having babies and getting married, and they just want to put me where they are so we can go to nursery together and stuff, Jessica admitted. m like, Im resisting.
Here are a few other excerpts from the interview.
On her reputation as one of the most fit celebrities in Hollywood:
s so hard for months on end to maintain a strict diet and exercise program.
On turning to plastic surgery someday:
I am really afraid of blades on my face. That freaks me out beyond belief. I would way rather have wrinkles than have some slice-up going on.
Jessica on becoming a movie star:
“I never thought to myself, ‘I’m going to do this musical, then I’m going to be a movie star.’ I never made that jump. For a very long time I wasn’t thought of as anyone with any credibility in the film world. Everyone is tramping through the swamp everyday in this business.”
On working in TV:
“I was really up tight, when you work on television for a long time you’re in a really organised situation; in film, it’s so much more improvisational and relaxed.” Jessica on being in the film The Illusionist: “I was so thrilled to get that part, it was such a joy for me, oh it was great.”
For more photos and the rest of the interview, check out Marie Claire.
By the way Jessica was at the NightBird recording studios recently at the Sunset Marquis Hotel, where she recorded tracks for music producer Marius De Vries.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United Sates and, perhaps the world.. One in 150 children is diagnosed with ASD. These numbers can not be explained solely by increased awareness or changes to the diagnostic criteria. It is a health crisis and I will act accordingly. There are many Americans with special needs. They will have a partner in the federal government under my administration.
In the same survey, he was asked how much funding he would support for finding environmental (as opposed to genetic) causes of autism.
There is much evidence to suggest that ASD is a genetically-based neurological condition with environmental triggers. As president, I will lead an effort to conduct research to confirm these findings and study the potential triggers. We must find out why many Americans have ASD and other special needs, the causes, and best treatments and intervention.
In a later question specifically about investigating vaccines, though, he largely dodged the issue:
I believe that the next president must restore confidence and open communication with the American people. This includes environmental policies and government funded research. An Obama administration will go where the science and the facts lead us, whether it is about climate change or toxic heavy metals in our environment.
Shortly after McCain suggested a connection between autism and vaccines, Obama made a statement on the trail that many interpreted to mean Obama also was suspicious of vaccines. That interpretation is not universal, though.
Heres what he said: ve seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Some people are suspicious that its connected to the vaccines. This person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it.
Was he referring to himself when he said this person included? The campaign says no. They sent the Washington Post video of the event, and Obama points to somebody in the audience who, presumably, asked the question.
